Criminal: The Sinners 1

Criminal: The Sinners 1
Sep 2009

The Sinners - Part One
by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Val Staples

Sebastian Hyde is fed up with Tracy Lawless, his top killer, who seems to have something of a conscience, but Hyde decides to give him another chance. Hyde asks Lawless to figure out who has been killing some of his other top people, people that most criminals know are untouchable.

Tracy gets some help from Elaine, Hyde’s young wife, who insists on visiting him at his place, despite the precarious position it puts them in.

The first person Tracy wants to talk to is Detective Hill, a cop who is in Hyde’s pocket. Three teenagers (Leon, Evan, Danny) lead Hill into a trap and kill him before Tracy gets the chance to talk to the dirty cop.

This installment ends with the arrival of a US Army detective who is looking for a deserter.

Thoughts

There are two other characters who pop up in this installment but in incidental ways. I get the impression that Brubaker and Phillips want us to think that they are just part of the scenery but I’ve got a feeling that they will wind up playing bigger roles in the story before it is over. The first is Chester, another one of Hyde’s enforcers. The second is Sabrina, Hyde’s carefree, teenage daughter.

Good start. I like how Brubaker and Phillips seem to reveal the truth behind the mystery within the first installment. This leaves lots of room for nuance in other areas.
