Jack is still recovering from the concussion he received, in Xenozoic Tales 7, when he gets a visit from Dahlgren. Hannah was keeping him company but she reads the signs and decides to for a walk. Dahlgren is there to warn him that the council, of which she is a member, are getting increasingly irritated with his behavior. She encourages him to get out of town for a while.

He thanks her for the information and asks how he can repay her. She suggests that he should cool his relationship with Hannah. Mustapha Cairo shows up before their conversation can progress any further.

Christine St. Clare returns to Zurich where she reports her findings on Manhunter (aka Paul Kirk) to Damon Nostrand, her boss at Interpol. Manhunter escaped a trap set for him on board a ship traveling from Calcutta to Burma by killing a tiger with a Bundi dagger. He first caught Interpol’s attention months before that when he showed up at Banque International to withdraw money. Kirk was believed to be dead. He hadn’t been seen in over 25 years. They checked his fingerprints and found that they matched the ones that the bank had on file.

The Growing Pool

Some scientists from the City in the Sea find something hundreds of years old. It is still alive but it doesn’t resemble life as they know it. It works it’s way out of the bunker where they find it and into a nearby pond.

Hannah was there working with the scientists from the beginning of the expedition. Jack shows up just as the thing escapes. They do their best to quarantine the watering hole.

Manhunter

Chapter 1: The Himalayan Incident

Haj the Ancient tells Interpol agent Christine St. Clair what he knows about Paul Kirk, the Manhunter. The masked man arrived in Nepal recently. He tricked some locals into leading him to the Pendrang monastery in a hidden valley. The monastery was guarded by three blind archers. They slowed him down but did not stop him.

Foundling

Hannah searches for a missing boy. The boy disappeared 10 years before but his mother claims she saw him recently. Hannah finds the boy only to lose him. She winds up in a cave that belongs to the Grith but leaves after something spooks her.

Hannah’s story is told in flashback as she relates it to Jack. Jack knew about the boy. He knew the Grith had him. They saved the boy’s life but then kept him because he knew too much about them.

The Cosmic Cube, which is carefully guarded at Project Pegasus, awakens. The changes in its status quickly comes to the attention of three entities: the Shaper of Worlds, the Aquarian, and the scientists of Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM). The latter group decides that the time is right to attack Project Pegasus and retrieve the cube. They launch an all out assault on the research facility.

Excursion

Jack Tenrec barges into Hannah Dundee’s quarters. He knows that she took a book from the library (in Xenozoic Tales 4) and has come to retrieve it. She plays dumb and doesn’t admit to having the missing book. He isn’t convinced and looks around her quarters without finding it.

He eventually gives up on finding the book and suggests that they go sailing. He wants her to show him the fishing techniques that she has been boasting about. She agrees and they head to the dock. They are stopped by two members of the governing council (Nock and Dahlgren) who want to know what Jack learned from Ushijima, one of the moles. Jack says he’ll tell them later and then takes off with Hannah.
