Officer Katie NEPD
by Paul Grist

Kate Felix flashes back to a childhood memory of the New Eden Police Department. It was the day that she first met Dennis Harvey. He was already a police officer at the time.

Thoughts

The flashback fills up 24 of the 32 pages in this issue. The narrative doesn't jump back and forth between the present and the past, seven of the eight pages that are set in the present come at the end of the story, after the flashback.

Amateur archaeologist and collector of ancient weapons Carter Hall (in 1940) receives a new item to add to his collection. It is a crystal blade. He starts to feel light headed when he examines it. He sits down, falls asleep, and dreams that he is the reincarnation of Prince Khufu of Egypt who lived more than 2500 years ago.

Khufu and Princess Shiera, his girlfriend, are captured and executed by Hath Set, priest of Anubis. Carter Hall soon discovers that Hath Set and Shiera have also been reincarnated. Carter is briefly reunited with Shiera but then she is captured by Dr. Anton Hastor, the reincarnation of Hath Set and an expert in the field of electricity. Hastor is preparing to kill Shiera in a ritual sacrifice when Carter Hall, dressed in a hawk themed costume breaks in to his estate and interferes with Hastor’s plans.

His Name Is Taboo
by Marv Wolfman, Mike Ploog, Frank Chiaramonte, John Costanza, Petra Goldberg, Roy Thomas

The Werewolf finds himself a prisoner of the wizard Taboo and his protégé, Topaz. Philip Russell, Jack’s stepfather is also there and also a prisoner of Taboo who blames the elder Russell for what happened to Algon, his son.

The Werewolf flashes back to what Jack last remembered doing. He was hanging out with Clary and Sam, his neighbors, in his apartment. He drove Clary to Mallet Studios who hired her to appear in one of their low grade horror films. He later drove out to the Verdugo Mountains by himself. It was there that he transformed into the Werewolf and was knocked out and taken prisoner by Topaz and some of Taboo’s thugs.

Terry and the Pirates Vol. 5 - Extras

Terry and the Pirates Vol. 5: 1943-1944
By Milton Caniff

Preface
by Dean Mullaney

Milton Caniff continued to change things up in Terry and the Pirates in 1943 and 1944. One of the most notable things he did was to have the main characters serve in the military and have the focus of the story be the war itself.

Terry and the Pirates (35.1)

Vol. 5: 1943-1944
By Milton Caniff

Beamings
Dec 25, 1944 - Apr 1, 1945

This is the ninth of twelve stories in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the fourth era of Caniff’s run on the strip. This era began in late Jan 1942 and ran through early Nov 1945 and is called The War Years in the companion book.

The Wikipedia article on Terry and the Pirates breaks the entire series down into 60 arcs. It breaks this arc down into the following arcs:

51 - "The Dragon and the Snake" (12/26/44 to 4/3/45)

04/06/24
Dec 25-27, 1944 - The first of these strips is a single panel that shows an air plane flying through the mountains and a Christmas message from Milton Caniff. The other two strips show a unit of sailors arriving at the airfield in India where Terry and the others are based. The face of the leader of the navy unit isn’t shown but I’ve got a feeling it is going to be a familiar one.
