History Lesson

Jack and Hannah examine the remains of Gorgostamos. He is nothing but a skeleton. They take one of his teeth back with them but leave the rest there. Jack suspects that Gorgostamos was planning to kill him based on the scope attached to his rifle.

They head back to the City in the Sea. Hannah is full of questions. She wonders about the Grith and other things. Jack doesn’t question so much and prefers to accept the world as it is. He agrees to take her to the library in the hopes that she find answers to some of her questions.

I bought this when it first came out. I was very much into All-Star Squadron at the time. The Shining Knight was a regular in that series although he was seen less frequently after the first year or so. I probably was aware of Frank Frazetta before buying this issue between his paintings that were made into posters and book covers and his work in the 1970s revival of All-Star Comics.

This is the first story (of eight) in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the second phase of Caniff’s run on the strip. This phase began in late Aug 1936 and ran through late Apr 1939 and is called Days of High Adventure in the companion book. This is also the first story where the Daily and Sunday strips are part of the same story.

Hannah is in a bit of a funk. Jack hasn’t talked to her since his car got wrecked. He refuses to give his okay to the treaty that she has hammered out with the council.

Jack leaves. Gorgostamos, one of the council members, encourages Hannah to go with him to try and find Jack. He thinks they can talk some sense into him. She goes along with the idea. They follow him out of town where they get separated.
