What Can One Man Do?
by Denny O’Neill, Neal Adams, Dick Giordano, John Costanza

Oliver Queen considers running for mayor of Star City. Everyone he asks for advice (Dinah Lance, Bruce Wayne, Hal Jordan, Clark Kent) urges him not to do it. He is ready to forget it when he sees something awful happen and changes his mind.

Thoughts

This is mostly a Green Arrow/Oliver Queen story.

Dying City!
by Harvey Kurtzman, Alex Toth

An elderly Korean man recalls how the war destroyed his family and the city in which he lives.

Thoughts

There are lots of little moments in this 7-page story. I could describe them all but I think a very basic description is better in a case like this. There are a number of wordless panels in this story. I like this use of sound effects and captions. This story is told entirely from the old man’s perspective. American soldiers do appear in this story but they don’t get very many lines and they are not the main characters. Ultimately this story is about the havoc and destruction caused by war, specifically on civilian populations. The story is, in the end, a little preachy or moralistic but I didn't feel like that brought the story down.

Lawless - Part 3
by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Val Staples

Tracy and Mallory start hanging out together, sleeping together. They rob an ATM, together. The other members of the crew are suspicious of him, still. They warn him about Mallory. Tracy learns that he reminds them of someone; he assumes it is his brother.

Tracy gets attacked by armed men on the street one night. He kills all four of them. They were there for the money he stole in Part 1. Tracy doesn’t know it, but that was counterfeit money.

Tracy goes to see Leo who is now locked up. Leo was a friend of Rick, Tracy’s brother. He talks Leo into vouching for him, if and when someone calls him for a reference. Leo is reluctant but agrees to do it. Tracy finds out soon thereafter that he has been accepted by the crew.

Terry and the Pirates (28)

Vol. 4: 1941-1942
By Milton Caniff

Bomber Base
Jul 19 - Aug 22, 1942

This is the second of twelve stories in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the fourth era of Caniff’s run on the strip. This era begins in late Jan 1942 and ran through early Nov 1945 and is called The War Years in the companion book.

The Wikipedia article on Terry and the Pirates breaks the entire series down into 60 arcs. The arcs in the companion book are usually longer than the ones in the Wikipedia article. That is not the case this time around. This arc is the second half of the following arc:

38 - (6/13/42 - 8/21/42) "With the Air Corps"

01/24/23
Jul 19, 1942 - Captain Hall, the pilot of the bomber, radios ahead to let the bomber know that he has a wounded American woman on board. There is another patient at the base, Terry Lee.

Lawless - Part 1
by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Val Staples

Tracy Lawless goes AWOL and returns to his hometown, not long after getting out of the brig. He learned that Rick, his brother, had been killed months earlier at the time he returned to his unit. He suspects foul play and is looking for payback.

Tracy turns to Jake, an old acquaintance, who for the right price, helps set Tracy up. Jake also points out the crew that Rick used to hang with. Tracy hangs out at the Undertow and keeps an eye on them.

Tracy kills one of them, efficiently disposes of the body, and then offers his services to Rick’s old buddies.
