The surprise guest turns out to be the KGB. Wallace and Karpin are about to get arrested when Don Weldon shows up, mows down a couple of KGB agents with his car, and escapes with Wallace and Crocker. Weldon has to drop them off somewhere else in Prague, along the river, and return the car which is in Barclay’s name.

The KGB questions Barclay and Weldon, the latter of whom buys Wallace and Karpin some time by lying. Wallace and Karpin make it to the Austrian border. Wallace makes it home safely but Karpin is shot and killed while trying to crawl through the fence.

Crocker meets with Don Weldon (at that time the number two man in Prague) who explains the plan to him for extracting Karpin. Crocker moves ahead with the extraction plan but things go south quickly. Karpin was under surveillance and then he and Crocker almost get captured at the meeting place. Crocker gets shot escaping from the trap.

Crocker and Karpin hole up in a safe house. Francis Barclay, the number one man in Prague, has no interest in sticking out his neck to help Crocker. Barclay starts to draft a message to the home office blaming Crocker for going ahead with the extraction despite a (nonexistent) warning from Barclay.

They find that Abra Kadabra is the one controlling the giant monsters but something doesn’t read right about that to Batman. He calls in Plastic Man and has him retrieve the living creature of unknown origin or classification that is controlling the supervillain.

Fear!

Spider-Man runs into Hawkeye who is scared out of his mind. Hawkeye has just fled the scene of an attack on an armored car. Hawkeye was in the vehicle when it was attacked. It was transporting something of value for his employer, Cross Technology Enterprises (CTE). Mister Fear robbed the armored car and took a device that he expects will help him to build an atomic bomb.

Spidey and Hawkeye go looking for Mister Fear once the effects of the panic inducing gas wear off. They track him down to a penthouse apartment that overlooks the East River. They are ready for his tricks but Mister Fear still gets the upper hand momentarily. Hawkeye almost gets killed but in the end the heroes stop Mister Fear, recover the missing tech, and turn supervillain over to the police.

Minder Three Paul Crocker returned empty handed (but alive) from East to West Berlin, in 1986. He was stopped at the border by the KGB but then allowed to pass through. Minder One Lindsay Mills didn’t make it back from a mission in Ukraine. Crocker was home for less than a day when he was sent back out on a mission to Czechoslovakia to pick up a KGB agent who wanted to defect.

James Wason, Crocker’s boss, advised him to be extremely cautious, given the state of affairs, including the death of Mills. A Russian KGB agent who stopped Crocker at the border had the would-be defector, Valery Karpin, in Prague, under surveillance.

Brian Doyle, a priest, searches for Steve, his brother. Steve murdered his wife Meredith and their two children. The police are aware of what happened but not why it happened or where Steve can be found. Clover, the uniformed police officer who was run over and almost killed in the previous issue, grew up with Brian, Steve, and Meredith. 

Brian eventually catches up to Steve at the top of the Empire State Building. The two brothers have it out. Brian was in love with Meredith and never really stopped caring for her in that way. He resented Steve for luring her away from him.

Hawkeye finds himself temporarily out of a job after he is replaced on the Avengers roster by Falcon. Hawkeye leaves Avengers mansion disgruntled but before long he lands a job at Cross Technological Enterprises (CTE) as their new security chief.

Deathbird breaks into Warehouse 12 during Hawkeye’s first week on the job. Hawkeye confronts her and they fight inside the warehouse. Deathbird seems to be too much for the archer to handle but Hawkeye evens the odds and defeats her. She is hauled away by CTE security guards but not until after Hawkeye kisses her, which enrages her.

Annalise takes the fight to Rook who has taken over Lord Mortus volcano stronghold. Annalise is a killing machine. She eliminates many of Rook’s troops. Eventually she locates Rook who is in the process of interrogating the Roboman. She and Rook fight. They talk. She gets the upper hand. He gets the upper hand. She gets it back.

Rook escapes using a jet pack. Annalise returns to her mother. For a brief time they get along but then they get into an argument and the rebuilt Roboman murders Nina. Annalise becomes the new tsarina. She calls the Roboman father but in the epilogue it is revealed that her father’s memories were never successfully transferred to the Roboman.

Clover gets run over but miraculously survives the incident. Valdez and Chapel go to extreme lengths to keep a civilian, William Grace, from killing himself not long after he saves the life of a young boy. . 

Thoughts

I like the street level aspects of much of this issue but the things that Valdez and Chapel did to save Grace from himself, on two separate occasions, were a bit too much and seemed out of character with the rest of the story.

Huntress and Lawrence work together to figure out what SHIELD agent Rico Santana is really up to. The story ends with Santana and Lawrence dead and Huntress branded a traitor by the agency she seeks to help.

Clover, Valdez, Xaviera, and Chapel meet Jackson Vale after he runs into them on the street. He’s carrying a rifle and in his rush to get where he’s going he knocks down Clover. The officers chase Vale down but then Detective Kurt arrives on the scene after they take Vale into custody.

I got up, took care of stuff and left the space where I stayed in Lynchburg around 8:45 this morning. Before leaving I ate the last bit of Saturday night’s dinner that still remained. I stopped at The Bagel & I for a little bit more. I’m not sure I got my money’s worth but it was filling.

I drove from there to a Sheetz in Ruckersville, VA. I took a short break and then moved on without putting any gas in my car or buying anything. My next stop was the Sheetz in Bealeton, VA. I was almost out of gas by then so I filled the tank and then drove the rest of the way home. I got home around 1:40 PM.

I unpacked my stuff, put things away, and then updated my comic book inventory and want list spreadsheets.

I got up early, took care of the usual stuff and then went to Family Dough Bagels. I got one bagel cinnamon raisin toasted with butter and a half dozen to take home with me. I ate the bagel with the last of the biryani from Thursday's lunch in Warrenton. I packed all my stuff and checked out of the place (where I spent the last couple nights) around 10:30.

I got to the convention center a little after 11. I did a little bit of browsing before heading upstairs for the Marvels and Monsters with Tom Scioli panel. It may as well have been called the Tom Scioli Spotlight panel because that’s basically what it was. 

Tom was interviewed by comic book scholar Michael Kobre. They discussed various projects on which Scioli has worked. The only one that I have read is his biography of Jack Kirby. There was a little bit of talk about projects he would like to tackle.

I woke up at a reasonable hour, took a shower, and got dressed. I had a bite to eat, leftover Indian food from Thursday. I decided to wear the red Indie Island t-shirt I bought yesterday. Unlike yesterday I made arrangements for parking in advance. Yesterday I parked in a garage a couple blocks from the convention center where I have parked in the past.

Usually I have paid less than $10 to park there on Fridays and nothing on Saturdays and Sundays. This time it cost me $21 to park there on Friday. I’m not sure why because I checked in advance and it looked like the price would be $10. I paid $11 today to park in a garage that was about six blocks from the convention center. I just made a reservation to park there again tomorrow, for the same price. Better safe than sorry.

Everything did not go according to plan today. In retrospect I think the problem was that I skipped dinner last night. I got up on time, took a shower, got dressed, and packed everything up according to plan. I went and got some breakfast, a couple bagels. Maybe if I had got a breakfast sandwich with egg and sausage or something like that then I might not have had a problem, but I didn’t so I did.

I sat in my car and waited until I felt a little better. I started to drive to Charlotte but I felt weak despite having eaten half of one of the bagels. I pulled into a gas station and sat in my car, with the air conditioning on. I thought that maybe it was just a matter of having had a headache the night before, which was more or less gone by the time I left Lynchburg. It cut into the amount of sleep I got but resting in the car didn’t seem to help much.

I left home around 11:30 and drove to Warrenton, VA. With the heavy traffic in the DC area (mostly on the beltway) it took me about 90 minutes to get there. I ate lunch at Taj Palace Indian Cuisine. It was a very good meal. I had enough leftovers for another meal.

I had a bit of trouble connecting my phone to the internet once I got back in my car. I knew more or less where to go next. I made a stop at a Wawa in Warrenton before getting back on Route 29 and continuing south. My next stop after that was a gas station near Ruckersville, VA. I arrived there around 3:20. I stretched my legs, used the bathroom, and called one of my brothers before getting back on the road around 3:40.

He rushes there and finds Mockingbird breaking into one of the warehouses. She tells him that she has tracked the components of a “mass mind controlled device” to CTE.

Two days ago, as VEIL was attacking Dante Alderman’s island, Agent Rook tried to engage Alderman in a conversation but Alderman ended the conversation fairly abruptly.

In the present, the SADIKS pulls Annalise out of the water. She has lost an arm. It gives her one of its arms, steals a vehicle, and tries to get to somewhere safe. They stop in a town. Annalise gets out and talks to some kids. Rook shows up and tries to take her but the SADIKS interferes with that plan. Annalise and the SADIKS get away in Rook’s car, leaving him behind. The vehicle they were in was totaled during the fight with Rook.

I have no idea what Susie and Buzz have been doing. Maybe they will play a bigger role in this arc than they did in the first two arcs.

This story, according to the note on page seven, is about the underworld, presumably the criminal underworld. For the most part what I found in this issue was a story about four police officers. I’m not sure how they directly and indirectly interact with the criminal underworld. Maybe this issue is the preface or the introduction. Maybe some of these police officers have ties to the criminal underworld or will develop them as the story evolves. I don’t know.

The Coming of… Dragon Lord!

Ral Dorn flees to Earth, pursued by the Dragon Riders. He crosses paths with the Fantastic Four. The Thing trusts him but the Human Torch does not. Ral Dorn, whose father was a Dragon Rider and who also aspires to be one, tells them that he has been accused of murdering the dragon younglings that he cared for. He also tells them about Lalique, his girlfriend, whom they meet later in the story.

The Fantastic Four help Ral Dorn to locate Dragon Man. Ral Dorn is convinced that Dragon Man will be his steed. The Dragon Riders catch up to Ral Dorn and the Fantastic Four just as they arrive in the abandoned mine where Dragon Man lived. A fight breaks out with the Fantastic Four siding with their new friend. The fight ends when Ral Dorn, Dragon Man, and the Invisible Girl vanish before their eyes.

He gets into a fight with Slaughter and kills him. Zoe, Von Chance, and a contingent of SOS troops arrive on the scene soon thereafter.

Zack tries to explain what Slaughter had in mind. They don’t buy what he’s telling them. He winds up back in prison.

The werewolf goes to see Doctor Milo, after the fight with Batman. He changes back into a man, Anthony Lupus. Milo helped Lupus overcome debilitating headaches by accelerating his proclivity for lycanthropy. Milo now demands that Lupus kill Batman before he cures Lupus of lycanthropy.

Four Against Ego!

The Fantastic Four land on the surface of Ego and begin to explore. They discover engines that Galactus attached to Ego. The Thing, following the directions of Mister Fantastic, removes one of the power packs that gives life to one of the engines. The team then descends into Ego, looking for his brain. One by one they are forced to turn back as the pressure gets to be too much until only the Thing is left to complete the mission.

Ego is enraged and fires up the engines, planning to head straight for Earth. Ego veers off course without the power pack that the Thing removed. He accidentally heads instead into the sun where he is destroyed. The Fantastic Four barely escape with their lives and head back to Earth.

One of the SADIKS pulls Annalise out of the rubble and checks to make sure that she isn’t badly injured. It tries to get her to safety but she has her own ideas as to what she wants to be doing. They encounter a couple of the VEIL soldiers who invaded the island where Annalise lives with her father. The SADIKS, which the troops don’t notice, kills them.

Lord Mortus, an ally of the Vitruvian, consults with the other members (The Unknown Man, Pangea, Mr. Perfect, Tsarina Plague) of La Coterie de Septembre about the operation that VEIL just launched against Dante’s island home. All except Tsarina Plague agree that they must do something about it. She hangs up on them after making it clear that they are not all in agreement.

Skip Collins, an employee of Acme Aglet (a Vanderbilt company) goes to New York City on a business trip. He possesses the ability to change things, remake things, but he uses it sparingly. He watches from a distance as the Fantastic Four deal with a crisis which may be of global proportions.

He does what he can to help them without revealing who he is or what he is doing. The Thing sees him but only briefly.

The issue ends with Skip seeming to have lost his superpower as the Fantastic Four head into outer space where they encounter Ego, the Living Planet.

She goes to look for the key but her father finds her while she is looking for it.

Tara's ship need some repairs. Tara, Robin, and Malo land on Venus where Haneesh, a local bandit leader, helps them with the repairs but only after they agree to do a job for him. He wants them to steal the Jewel of Morn from Karlsen who lives on the third moon of Jupiter. Haneesh promises them membership in the Brotherhood of Space if they can bring him the Jewel.

Their first attempt to steal the Jewel of Morn is unsuccessful and ends with Tara a prisoner of Karlsen. Robin and Malo redouble their efforts. They rescue Tara and get the famed Jewel of Morn.

The Human Torch seeks to right a wrong by investigating a crime from years ago. He receives a letter written by David George Munson, someone he hasn’t seen since high school. Munson was recently executed after being sentenced to death for murder, a murder Munson claimed not to have committed. Munson and Johnny Storm were far from friends but Johnny feels obliged to look into the matter. 

Johnny’s investigation leads him to Hammerhead. The two fight. Hammerhead is wearing a suit that was built for him by the Tinkerer. It augments his strength. The Human Torch damages the suit but Hammerhead escapes into the night.

Johnny clears Munson’s name but his mother doesn’t really seem to care. She knew what her son was like.

The Four are knocked for a loop. After they switch up their adversaries with one another and Mr. Fantastic figures out how to defeat their would be assassins they finish them off in no time flat. They locate Diablo with some help from Doctor Strange and turn him over to the police.

Zack Overkill, no longer in witness protection but an officer of the Special Operation Service (SOS), gets in trouble with Colonel Von Chance, his supervisor, after Ignatius Beekman attacks Zack while he is in his civilian identity. Beekman mistook Zack for Lazarus, an old school crime fighter from decades ago. Zack turns to Zoe Zeppelin for help in dealing with Von Chance but she refuses to get involved even though Von Chance reports to her and she and Zack have a sexual relationship.
