Shadows of Doubt

John knocks out Lillian. He and Noleski fight their way through the cops who have come to arrest them. John takes the unconscious Lillian with him. Noleski heads in a different direction but agrees to meet up at an undisclosed rendezvous point later.

John takes Lillian to a hideout. They talk but are interrupted by a trio of bounty hunters. John dispatches the bounty hunters and then he and Lillian go looking for one of John’s contacts in the underworld.

Chapter One: The Second Coming of Superman

Superman returns from a rescue mission in outer space just in time to save his friends and others at a parade in his honor in downtown Metropolis. They are almost crushed by a giant statue of Superman which comes apart in the midst of the parade. The statue was donated by Lori Lemaris and the people of Tritonis.

This is the fourth of four stories in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the fifth and final era of Caniff’s run on the strip. This era began in late Nov 1945 and ran through the end of Dec 1946 and is called On Final Approach in the companion book.

The Wikipedia article on Terry and the Pirates breaks the entire series down into 60 arcs. It breaks this arc down into the following arcs:

060 - "Fanning Old Flames" (10/9/46 to 12/29/46)

There are just 33 days worth of reading left for me in this run on the strip, until Milton Caniff stopped writing and drawing it and moved on to Steve Canyon. I’m not sure who will turn up in this arc or to whom the two titles for it refer. I should be done with it by mid to late March. It’s been quite a journey.

The Blind God’s Tears

Korgon tells the Fantastic Four about how he came to be the Blind God. His story about his past and that of the community of vikings whom he protects convinces them to help him. Mister Fantastic re-engineers one of Korgon’s machines to help heal him. One of the Vikings who doesn’t care for the Fantastic Four messes with the machine when no one is looking, which makes things worse when the machine is used on Korgon.

Korgon blames the Fantastic Four for what happens when the machine is activated. The Vikings attack the superheroes. Thor shows up and does his best to calm everyone down. The situation continues to get worse which leads Thor to call on Odin for help.

Shadow Cops

John Gaunt and Jericho Noleski return to Cynosure only to find themselves wanted by the Trans Dimensional Police for the murder of two TDP officers. They decide to run rather than stand and fight, for fear of killing some of the TDP officers who want to arrest them. They turn to Roscoe for help but he doesn’t have access to the sort of information they need.

Gaunt turns next to Mayfair, the founding director of Cadre, a law enforcement organization to which Grimjack used to belong. They get some information they need from Mayfair but that alone is not enough. Finally, Gaunt goes to see Lillian Seffington of the Shadow Police in the hopes that she can corroborate some of the data he and Noleski have dug up.

The Darkfield Illumination

The Fantastic Four all experience fluctuations in their super powers when a red cloud arrives over Manhattan. They head to the North Pole after learning that the cloud seems to have something to do with an explosion that happened at the North Pole. They discover at the North Pole a group of men who look like Vikings who are led by one with god-like powers, Korgon.

The story in this issue ends on a cliffhanger and will be concluded in the next issue.
