In the Jungle, the Deadly Jungle

This story picks up after the events of Phoenix: The Untold Story.

The X-Men and Jean Grey are returned to the mansion by the Sh’iar. They are blissfully unaware of what the Sh’iar now have in their possession.

Two months later. The X-Men travel to the Savage Land to investigate a strange energy reading that Professor X discovered using Cerebro. Kitty wants to go but the Professor wants her to stay behind. She stows away aboard the team’s jet but she is quickly found by Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine.

Kitty accidentally phases through the floor of the jet just as they are arriving in Antarctica. Cyclops quickly lands the jet and they go looking for her. Wolverine finds her scent but it seems as if she just disappeared. The team splits up. Cyclops, Storm, and Wolverine head in one direction. Colossus and Nightcrawler head in another. Cyclops’ group find someone but it isn’t Kitty. It is Karl Lykos.

Andy and Nile recover, grab Booker, and escape from the building. They take Booker out into the desert. Andy and Booker argue. He tries to explain why he betrayed them. Andy doesn’t accept his explanation but he agrees to help them, rescue Nicky and Joe.

Andy, Booker, and Nile return to the building in disguise. They fight their way through dozens of guards. Nicky and Joe fool the doctor who is experimenting on them into letting them go. The five kill more guards and Merrick.

Wonder Woman gets chased by a shadowy creature. Sandman comes to her rescue. The next day Lieutenant Diana Prince gets promoted to the rank of major by General Darnell at the Pentagon. He promises her that she will soon be promoted to the rank of colonel after she is done with her assignment at the arms talks in Mexico. She leaves the meeting after snapping at Colonel Steve Trevor.

Wonder Woman gets attacked once again by the shadow creature. This time she is in her invisible jet. She tries vibrating the jet at high speed to get away from the shadow creature and inadvertently transports herself to Earth-2.

This is the fourth story (of nine) in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the third era of Caniff’s run on the strip. This era begins in late Apr 1939 and ran through late Jan 1942 and is called Between Spear Points in the companion book.

The Wikipedia article on Terry and the Pirates breaks the entire series down into 60 arcs. It breaks this arc down into the two following arcs:

Sep 2-4, 1940 - Dude, Pat, and the others are free and clear of the Invader airplanes but their plane is damaged. The Dragon Lady and Raven talk while they exchange their wet clothes for dry ones aboard a boat.

Raven and the Dragon Lady must have swam to the boat, which gives Caniff an excuse to show them in their underwear.

Andy urges Nile to forget her family. Andy has forgotten what her mother and her siblings look like in the five millennia that she has been alive. She remembers Achilles, a man she met and fell in love with a little over two hundred years ago. He was mortal. She watched him grow old but left him before he died.

Merrick tries to interrogate Nicky and Joe. They aren’t cooperative. They fight back but Merrick and his men are ruthless.

Andy, Booker, and Nile head to Dubai, based on a lead that Booker finds. It turns out to be another trap. Booker has betrayed them.

Dinah takes a job at Meadowhill School. She senses that something isn’t right at the school. Jason Belmore, the headmaster, is frightened of the cook, Mr. Grandy.

Green Lantern and Green Arrow run into Carrol Ferris as they are leaving the school. She is in a wheelchair. They try to give her a lift back into town but their car falls apart on the way there. They decide to return to the school which they suspect is the source of their car problems.

Grandy is the evil mastermind. He lacks superpowers but he orders Sybil, a child with supernatural abilities, to do his bidding. Sybil is the one who injured Carrol and caused the car to come apart. Sybil uses her powers to knock Black Canary out.

Green Lantern and Green Arrow return to rescue Black Canary but they almost get killed themselves. Grandy pushes Sybil a little too far and she decides she’s had enough. She brings the roof down on Grandy and herself. The others escape without major injuries.

Hal declares that he wants another shot at a relationship with Carrol.

Booker recovers from what looks like a fatal wound. Andy reflects on Booker’s past as a soldier in Napoleon’s army that invaded Russia. She learns from Booker that Nicky and Joe were captured by Copley and his men. She also realizes they are probably coming back for her and Booker.

Nicky and Joe are long gone but Andy deals with Copley’s men who are waiting to capture her. Booker gets cleaned up. Once Andy gives the signal she, Booker, and Nile get out of there and head south to one of their hideouts in Les Baux-de-Provence.

Green Arrow and Black Canary get attacked by harpies. They fight them off and then reach out to Green Lantern for help.

Green Lantern gets ready to respond to the call for help from his friends when he also sees harpies. The harpies flee. He follows and winds up trapped in a jewel by the Witch Queen.

Green Arrow and Black Canary team up with some Amazons, after fighting with them. Black Canary and the Amazons make their way into the jewel and free Green Lantern, who was about to get killed by Medusa.

The Old Guard - Part 2

Andy, aka Andronika the Scythian, explains what she knows about herself and her teammates. She is at least 2000 years old. Nicky, aka Nicolo, and Joe, aka Yusuf, met 1000 years ago during the Crusades. They were on opposite sides and tried to kill each other multiple times before forming an alliance. Booker is only about 200 years old. There were at least two others who died hundreds of years ago.

Andy and the others, in the aftermath of the debacle that occurred in the previous installment, all dream of another. This is how it works. Andy goes to find Nile Freeman in Afghanistan while the others clean up and get out of the area as quickly as possible.

Copley, the current or former CIA operative who double crossed them, reports in to Merrick, who isn't pleased with the outcome of the latest operation. He wants a member of the team, alive. There is nothing other than the video of use from their recent attempt to capture the team. Merrick gives Copley a chance to redeem himself.

Death Be My Destiny!

Old Timer is put on trial by the Guardians of the Universe and sentenced to exile on the planet Maltus. He is stripped of his powers once the sentence has been handed down. Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Black Canary volunteer to go with him.

Maltus is overpopulated and extremely crowded. Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Old Timer are attacked by a crowd as soon as they arrive on the planet. They go looking for answers and find some in an archive building.

The quartet locate Juna, a scientist who was first seen as a savior and then later as a menace to the planet. She did what she could to help the planet after a wave of infertility struck the population.

Old Timer decides to stay. Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Black Canary return to Earth at the end of the story.

Phoenix: The Untold Story

The first 28 pages of this story are for the most part identical to the first 28 pages from X-Men (1963) 137. There is at least one panel, on page 12, that has been changed. Angel has been changed to Gladiator and the dialogue has also been changed. The 29th page is similar but some of the dialogue and captions have been changed. The last 5 pages of the story were not in X-Men 137.
