Escape into…the Trap!

Mellu continues to try to negate Shade. She flashes back to their shared history as he struggles to fight back. She is almost successful but he knocks the negator ray out of her hand just in time and then he knocks her out with a punch.

Shade returns to the Meta-Zone. He passes through the Zero-Zone on his way back to his home dimension. He fights off some flesh eaters in the Zero-Zone who have killed most of a security patrol. He brings the remnants of the security patrol back to the Meta-Zone where he anonymously deposits them.

This is the tenth of twelve stories in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the fourth era of Caniff’s run on the strip. This era began in late Jan 1942 and ran through early Nov 1945 and is called The War Years in the companion book. 

The Wikipedia article on Terry and the Pirates breaks the entire series down into 60 arcs. It breaks this arc down into the following arcs:

Apr 2-4, 1945 - Terry and Hu Shee reconnect with Hotshot. Neither Terry nor Hotshot want to bring up the fact that Snake was killed. Neither is sure that the other knows about it.

New Eden Police Officer Miguel Perez returns to duty. Donahue and Perez talk to a convenience store owner who chased off three gang members with his shotgun, Alice. Two of them were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Perez and Donahue find the third one. Perez shows no mercy once he has him cornered. He beats him after hitting him with their police car.

Art Bessiac hunts for an alligator in the sewers beneath New Eden. He finds it. He also finds Sergeant Nelson who wrestles with the gator and kills it with his bare hands. Bessiac shoots Nelson who seems at least half-crazed. 

The issue ends with the return of Kane. He is near the river. He’s there to investigate the death of a man who spent most of the issue fleeing from a blind man.

Form, a villain from the Meta-Zone, arrives in the Earth-Zone after passing through the Zero-Zone. She quickly learns that Morge Kale is one of the top criminal gang leader’s in town and seeks him out. Jake Gole, another criminal gang leader, gives Kale’s address to Shade in the hopes that Morge and Shade will kill one another. 

Shade arrives at Kale’s headquarters just as Form is using her supernatural abilities to interrogate Kale. Shade gets Form to release Kale but by then Kale’s mind is fried. Shade had hoped to get some information about Kempo’s location from Kale. 

Kempo, the man who framed Shade, is making plans to take over the criminal gangs in town.

Ka-Zar is unconscious and near death. Shanna blames herself for what happened to him and is losing her mind. Buth, their winged and green-skinned friend, transports them and Zabu to Aerie Shalan. Dherk, another friend, places Ka-Zara in the resurrection chamber and then diagnoses Shanna’s mental problem. He determines that they need to enter Shanna’s subconscious mind in order to save her.

Sergeant Nelson, leader of the Assertive No-Go Emergency Liason (ANGEL) Squad goes in to Independence Park by himself. He orders everyone the rest of his team to stay out. He gets into a fight with three members of the Park Keeper Gang. He deals with them and and keepss going.

Leroy, another member of the Park Keeper Gang, holds Mayor Dyson hostage with a knife in the basement of Independence Park. Mister Floppsie Whoppsie, undercover police officers Liz and Lucy, television reporter Dianne Scott and her cameraman, Henry Jacobs, and the Plunderer are also in the basement. Things get a bit chaotic. Everyone tries to avoid getting stabbed by Leroy who stabbed Henry Jacobs in the previous issue.

Escape to Battleground Earth!

Convicted traitor Rac Shade escapes from prison in the Meta Zone, thanks to a freak accident, and along with several other prisoners finds himself transported into the Zero Zone. Shade makes his way from the Zero Zone to Earth. He recovers (from his apartment) and dons the M Vest which he plans to use in his quest to get his name cleared.

N-Agent Mellu is sent from the Meta Zone to Earth to recover Shade. She has a personal score to settle with him. He was her teacher, her partner, and her fiancé. She believes he is responsible for crippling her parents. Mellu reports in to Wizor when she arrives in the Earth Zone. Wizor is the leader of the Occult Research Center (ORC), a front for the agents of the government of the Meta Zone. He questions the suitability of assigning Mellu to be the one to deal with Shade.

The FF (Frightful Four) arrive at the Baxter Building with the intent to kill the FF (Fantastic Four). The evil FF have already captured Spider-Man. The Trapster, disguised as Spider-Man, tricks Johnny Storm into opening a window and letting him in. The Trapster knocks Johnny out once he is inside. The Trapster next deals with the Thing.

The Trapster deactivates the buildings security system which gives his teammates (Wizard, Sandman, Electro) the opening they need to break in and join him. Electro uses his powers to knock the Invisible Woman out of the fight which just leaves Mr. Fantastic to be dealt with, or does it?
