Doctor Lester has the upper hand. He zaps Ava and turns her into an old woman, which she already was even though she didn’t look it. Doctor Lester turns his back on her to talk to Zack and she kills him with a pipe wrench. Ava frees Zack before she dies.

The Gambles!

Shade wakes up out of the color coma. He still feels weak and continues to float in the air. Colonel Kross gets Shade caught up on what happened since he went into the coma. President Olon and Doctor Sagan listen attentively. Shade tells them about the case he was working when he came into possession of the M-Vest. Colonel Kross, who was Shade’s superior at the time tells the part of that story that he knew and was personally involved in.

The case involved Captain Majan, Gola Zae, and a criminal gang leader named Madzu. Shade pursued Madzu into the Zero Zone. They fought there. Shade recaptured Madzu but before they left Shade met Xexlo, who threatened to kill him if he ever returned.

1. Sunny: Monkey Business

Sunny and Teddy try to win $50 in a radio contest. The announcer promises to give $50 to the first person to come to the studio dressed as a gorilla. Sunny and Teddy find a gorilla suit. Teddy puts it on but the zipper gets stuck and he can’t get out of it. He scares a few people on the way to the radio station.  (9 pages)

This was kind of silly but it did bring a smile to my face. They didn’t win the money in the end.

2. Sunny: Rookies at Hooky

Sunny, Teddy, Richy, and Barb all decide to ditch school because they haven’t done their homework for history class. They worry about getting caught but in the end it turns out they didn’t have anything to worry about. (7 pages)

I love how irresponsible all four of them are and how they were all counting on someone else in their group to bail them out.

The Possession of Franklin Richards!

The Fantastic Four try to relax and enjoy themselves. Reed Richard’s goes to the library. Sue stays home and plays with Franklin. Ben goes to see a movie. Johnny Storm races cars on a track.

Nicholas Scratch, the son of Agatha Harkness, who was banished to the Dark Realm by his mother after his last encounter with the Fantastic Four, returns. He uses his magical abilities to create a bridge to the Baxter Building via the portal to the Negative Zone.

Scratch immobilizes Franklin. Sue alerts the others who quickly make their way back to the Baxter Building. Scratch orders Franklin to kill the Fantastic Four. A battle begins but Franklin’s parents combine their forces and manage to sedate him.

This is the first of four stories in what Carl Horak, author of the Terry and the Pirates Companion, considers to be the fifth and final era of Caniff’s run on the strip. This era began in early Nov 1945 and ran through the of 1946 and is called On Final Approach in the companion book. 

The Wikipedia article on Terry and the Pirates breaks the entire series down into 60 arcs. It breaks this arc down into the following arcs:

55 - "Forced Landing" (11/6/45 to 12/28/45)

56 - "Still the Traitor" (12/29/45 to 3/12/46)

Nov 6-7, 1945 - Flip and Terry talk about what things are going to be like now that the war is over. Flip gives Terry a mission.

It isn’t clear where they are headed but based on what they talk about it sounds like they are headed back to China.

Amanda is pissed to learn that there was more to Zack than meets the eye. Zoe Zeppelin is pissed because Zack and Ava Destruction fled in her flying car.

Zack reminisces about Xander, his brother, and Ava. The two of them used to be together. It drove Zack nuts. Everything is different now.

The Color Coma!

President Olon of the Metan Council and Colonel Kross do what they can to help Shade. He is immobile and floating above the ground. His body has turned jet black but he changes color over course of the issue. They turn to Dr. Sagan for help. They risk being branded as traitors if they are found to be aiding Shade who has been sentenced to death. Colonel Kross tells a President Olon all he knows about the M-Vest while Dr. Sagan works diagnosing the problem with Shade.

Dr. Z.Z. moves forward with his plans to take over the Earth Zone. He and his stool pigeons have traveled to the Earth Zone and taken over the Occult Research Institute. They destroy the only device that can transport people directly from the Meta-Zone to the Earth Zone.
