Sunny 11

Sunny 11
Dec 1947

Stories by Bill Brown aka Al Feldstein

1. Sunny: Monkey Business

Sunny and Teddy try to win $50 in a radio contest. The announcer promises to give $50 to the first person to come to the studio dressed as a gorilla. Sunny and Teddy find a gorilla suit. Teddy puts it on but the zipper gets stuck and he can’t get out of it. He scares a few people on the way to the radio station.  (9 pages)

This was kind of silly but it did bring a smile to my face. They didn’t win the money in the end.

2. Sunny: Rookies at Hooky

Sunny, Teddy, Richy, and Barb all decide to ditch school because they haven’t done their homework for history class. They worry about getting caught but in the end it turns out they didn’t have anything to worry about. (7 pages)

I love how irresponsible all four of them are and how they were all counting on someone else in their group to bail them out.

3. Junior: Aches and Paints

Deena and Gwenny want Junior and Goofy to take them to the dance but the boys are broke. Junior and Goofy try to earn some money by painting a garage for Deena’s father. Nothing goes according to plan.  (6 pages)

This story ends very abruptly, well before the dance.  This is probably my least favorite story in this issue.

4. Sunny: What’s Cookin’?

Sunny invites Teddy over for dinner. He tries to help her prepare dinner but he makes a mess of whatever he does and whatever Sunny was trying to do. The fruit salad gets spilled all over the place, dishes get broken, and the steak that Sunny was cooking gets burnt to a crisp. (8 pages)

This one isn’t much better than the Junior story in this issue.

Junior seems to be an alternate version of Archie but I’m not sure if Sunny was also modeled after another comic book character.

Sunny does not go ice skating in this issue as shown on the cover.

This comic book can be read for free at Comic Book Plus. A collected edition was published about 10 years ago. It included the complete run of Sunny. It was called The Complete Junior and Sunny.
