Dr. Strange received the message from Mindy, letting him know what happened to Captain American, Nighthawk, Valkyrie, Hellcat, and Gargoyle. It feels like an attack on his soul. He collapses. Wong tends to him. When he comes to he summons the Son of Satan, the Beast, and Daredevil. He uses magic to learn of everything that Daredevil saw and experienced in Defenders (1972) 104 when he was in the company of the missing Defenders.

Zach Johnson leaves newscaster Tamara Dixon, also his girlfriend, to respond to a call for help. He changes his clothes and becomes Jack-in-the-Box. He gets to the scene of the crime a little too late. The victim is already dead but the killer is still present. The killer calls himself the Box and looks like a twisted, cybernetic version of Jack-in-the-Box.

The sorcerer tries to bring Sadu-Hem’s siblings to Earth. He tries to drain power from Liz but isn’t really successful. Things don’t look so good for the home team but they manage to pull out a W in the end.

The ending is a little murky. There is no clear explanation of why the tide turns but there’s plenty of hints dropped. Abe played a role in the fight to take down the Sorcerer as did Liz, once she broke free of his control. Hellboy did the bulk of the fighting.

The four Defenders, who were kidnapped by Central Information Bureau agents in Defenders (1972) 104, are still asleep. Guards, dressed like Roman Centurions, retrieve Kyle Richmond. They revive him and bring him to August Masters who now claims that there’s no such thing as the CIB. This introduction serves as a recap or summary of what cane before in Defenders 102-104.

A quartet of Defenders (Nighthawk, Valkyrie, Hellcat, Gargoyle) are celebrating Nighthawk’s legal victory when men from the CIB burst in. The heroes try to fight back but they are gassed to sleep by the “federal agents”. There were others in the room with the Defenders, including Matt Murdock, but the “feds” only take the four Defenders with them.

Clea and Gargoyle help their teammate, Kyle Richmond. His problems date back to events that happened in Defenders 14 and 93. Luann Bloom, Kyle’s nurse, is very skeptical about the mystical treatment.
