Chapter Six

Annalise takes the fight to Rook who has taken over Lord Mortus volcano stronghold. Annalise is a killing machine. She eliminates many of Rook’s troops. Eventually she locates Rook who is in the process of interrogating the Roboman. She and Rook fight. They talk. She gets the upper hand. He gets the upper hand. She gets it back.
Rook escapes using a jet pack. Annalise returns to her mother. For a brief time they get along but then they get into an argument and the rebuilt Roboman murders Nina. Annalise becomes the new tsarina. She calls the Roboman father but in the epilogue it is revealed that her father’s memories were never successfully transferred to the Roboman.
The cover is a bit misleading. The ending is not a complete disappointment but I wasn’t as satisfied by it as I wanted to be. There’s something about the relative ease with which Annalise rises to power that doesn’t feel earned. It all happened too fast.
There is another story planned that involves Rook which is supposed to be called In Good Hands with Bad Company but that’s all I know about it. It is supposed to come out in 2026 but so far nothing has been released as far as I can tell.
I don’t regret reading 5his story but I have my doubts as to whether I will give the next Rook story a go.
