Batman 255

Batman 255
Apr 1974

Moon of the Wolf
by Len Wein, Neal Adams, Dick Giordano

Batman fights off a werewolf that attacks a woman. The werewolf escapes while Batman is forced to abandon the fight after the werewolf throws the woman out a window. Batman goes to see commissioner Gordon, after rescuing the woman.

The werewolf goes to see Doctor Milo, after the fight with Batman. He changes back into a man, Anthony Lupus. Milo helped Lupus overcome debilitating headaches by accelerating his proclivity for lycanthropy. Milo now demands that Lupus kill Batman before he cures Lupus of lycanthropy.

Lupus lures Batman to a meeting, drugs him with a gas that only knocks out Batman, and not Lupus. He chains up Batman. Lupus turns into a werewolf and attacks Milo. He turns his attention back to Batman, after dealing with Milo, but Batman unlike Milo proves to be a much tougher opponent.

Thoughts

The story ends when the fight between Batman and Anthony Lupus ends. Batman and Milo do not cross paths in this story. There is no indication that Batman even knows that Milo hired Anthony Lupus to kill the caped crusader.

This is an okay story. I don’t hate it and I don’t love it. It has some spectacular visuals by Neal Adams. The page layouts are quite nice. The story is nice on the surface but it lacks the depth that I prefer to see in comic book stories. DC Comics stories in the mid-1970s weren’t exactly known for emotionally complex character interactions so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised with what I got.

Notes

Doctor Milo first appeared in Detective Comics 257 (Sep 1957). His only other appearance prior to this issue was just a few months later in Batman 112 (Dec 1957). Milo’s only other appearance following this story but prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths was in a story from Batman 326 (Aug 1980) and 327 (Sep 1980), both of which were also written by Len Wein.

Anthony Lupus first appeared in this issue. He has one more appearance prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths, in Detective Comics 505 (Aug 1981).
