JLA (1997) 61

JLA (1997) 61
Feb 2002

Two-Minute Warning
by Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, Tom Nguyen, David Baron, Ken Lopez

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), Flash (Wally West), Martian Manhunter, and Plastic Man deal with an infestation of kaiju that seem intent on battling one another in the North Atlantic Ocean.

They find that Abra Kadabra is the one controlling the giant monsters but something doesn’t read right about that to Batman. He calls in Plastic Man and has him retrieve the living creature of unknown origin or classification that is controlling the supervillain.

Thoughts

I’ve read this issue before. I read this run of JLA (61-90, 100, Justice League Elite 1-12) more or less as it was coming out. This was one of those series that looked good to me and that I decided to read in the early 2000s when I started to get back into reading comic books. I remember really enjoying it. I think it was partly the writing and partly the art.

Everything doesn’t make sense but I like the visuals. The kaiju are impressive. I love the sparring session between Batman and Wonder Woman. Plastic Man’s invasion of Abra Kadabra’s body is wonderfully gross looking. The creature Plastic Man retrieves from the fake magician’s body is a sight to behold.

I like the way this story was told in quick bursts but I found the resolution to be a bit confusing. It has been probably over 20 years since I last read it. I wonder if this is connected to the Obsidian Age which starts in JLA 66?

This was one of those stories that it pays to read more than once because there is so much happening all at once that it is hard to pick up on everything in a single read.
