Marvel Team-Up (1972) 95

...And No Birds Sing!
by Steven Grant, Jim Janes, Bruce Patterson, Barry Grossman, John Costanza

Peter Parker is getting ready to head home from Kennedy International Airport when he stops to change his clothes and help Mockingbird fight off a trio of men who attack her as she is headed to her car. Mockingbird explains that the men were from SHIELD but doesn’t take the time to explain what she’s up to before ditching the wallcrawling superhero.

Spidey gets knocked out jumping from a flying car and wakes up in the Manhattan HQ of SHIELD. Agent Delandan explains to him that Mockingbird (aka Bobbi Morse, aka Huntress) is scheming to assassinate Nick Fury. Delandan offers Spider-Man a chance to make up for his mistake (in helping her escape from SHIELD) by helping them capture her.

Mockingbird makes her way to SHIELD HQ Manhattan, well aware that she is being watched by agents of SHIELD. She breaks in but as Spider-Man quickly learns she is not there to assassinate Nick Fury. Delandan isn’t exactly what he claims to be. The Nick Fury Life Model Decoy (LMD) that Delandan used to lure Mockingbird to the Manhattan HQ isn’t exactly what it appears to be either. The issue ends with Delandan in custody and Mockingbird unconscious and badly injured.

Thoughts

This is the first and only appearance of Agent Delandan.

This is the first issue in which Bobbi Morse appears as Mockingbird. Her next appearance was in Hawkeye (1983) 1.

I'm not certain but I believe that Spider-Man's next encounter with Nick Fury and SHIELD was in Captain America (1968) 265 (Jan 1982).

This was a fun read. I enjoyed this story considerably more than the the one in Marvel Team-Up 92 (Apr 1980) even though they were both written by Steven Grant. It definitely feels like it was cut from a different piece of cloth that the Hawkeye story was.
