Human Target: Final Cut
Part Two: An Actor Prepares
by Peter Milligan, Javier Pulido, Todd Klein, Dave Stewart
Chance locates the apartment of Davey King, the guy who tried to kill Dai Thomas. Chance suspects that King is the one who abducted Ronan White. He finds a screenplay that King wrote: Final Cut. The phone rings while he is there. The answering machine picks up. Conchita is reaching out to Davey, her boyfriend. She wants to see him.
Chance picks up the phone while she is still on the line and begins to impersonate King. He goes to see her but she’s got company when he gets there, guys who are looking for the money she stole and, now that she has told them about Davey’s blackmail operation, they want that money too. Davey kills them but not before one of them jabs him with a syringe.
Chance wakes up later, alone. The money Conchita stole is there but she is gone. He goes to see Frank White. Frank shows him a place where his grandfather used to live. It’s very run down now. They don’t find any trace of Ronan. Later they meet with Mary.
Chance returns to King’s apartment after meeting with the Whites to search for more clues.
Thoughts
There are a couple movie posters on the walls of King’s apartment. One is for Sunset Boulevard (1950) and the other is for a film called Tomorrow is Yesterday. I can’t find any evidence of a movie by that name but there was an episode of the original Star Trek series with that title. The image on the poster makes me think of Odds Against Tomorrow (1959).
It occurs to me now that there is no explicit evidence that King abducted Ronan White. Where did Conchita go? Why didn’t she take the money? I thought at first that King woke up in Conchita’s apartment but when I took a closer look at the scene it looks like he is back in his apartment. Is that just a mistake or did Conchita somehow take him there before disappearing?
King met White a couple years earlier but is that the link that proves that he abducted Ronan or just a red herring? What will Chance do now? The end of the chapter is ambiguous as to his next move but there are hints.
Chance continues to have trouble getting lost in the identities of others.
This is still good. I want more. I will read more.
