Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight 30

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight 30
May 1992

Faces: Part 3
by Matt Wagner, Willie Schubert, Steve Oliff

Two-Face tells Batman his plan including how he expects Batman to die. Wren is still alive. Manon is revealed to be a bearded lady. Batman escapes. Wren is locked up with d’Urberville who shows him his deformity.

Batman locates Wren and d’Urberville and is about to rescue them when Two-Face shows up. The freaks overwhelm Batman and knock him out. Batman wakes up. Two-Face is standing over him and tells him some more of his plans before departing with Wren and the freaks in the dirigible.

Batman breaks free and makes his way onto the dirigible but not in time to save Wren. The freaks turn on Two-Face. The dirigible crashes. Two-Face’s plans come apart. Batman finally apprehends Two-Face and returns him to Arkham Asylum.

Bruce Wayne is left wondering why he and Harvey responded so differently to the traumas they experienced earlier in their lives.

Thoughts

What happened to d’Urberville? He vanished from the story about halfway through this issue. What about Manon? She vanished soon after she was revealed to be the bearded lady.

This is a decent story but I don’t love it. It felt like it needed a little more room to grow, to breathe and maybe a little more work. I don't regret reading it. I love the way Matt Wagner illustrated it and told the story visually. It just doesn’t quite do it for me in the end.
