Safeguards
by Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson
- Marta lives in Shadow Hill, a neighborhood or suburb of Astro City that seems to be more affected or controlled by magical forces than the downtown area where she works
- a number of super powered beings (both good and bad) pass through the story but this one is about Marta and the world of Astro City and not about anyone else in particular
- Marta has arguments with her parents about leaving Shadow Hill, she talks about being inspired by Winged Victory (super heroine) but WV only shows up briefly in the story
- it seems to also to be a story about being an outsider and from the other side of town
- there are a number of things thrown together in this story that are not tightly tied together but they work; the way she idolizes her boss who is engaged to a superhero
- ultimately Marta decides to quit her job in downtown AS and take a job in Shadow Hill, it isn't clear why she does this; it could be that this is her way of acknowledging her roots; it does seem as if this decision might have something to do with the attack by a bunch of super villains in which she gets injured; but there is no clear statement
- action-wise not my favorite but I really like how the story unfolds and it told from Marta's persepctive
