Avengers (1963) 273

Avengers (1963) 273
Nov 1986

Rites of Conquest!
by Roger Stern, John Buscema, Tom Palmer

Hercules gives away some key information while carousing in a bar. He’s just having fun and doesn’t realize that he’s talking to the Wrecker.

Moonstone develops a new weapon for Baron Zemo, the leader of the Masters of Evil. He is plotting the downfall of the Avengers. He knows how tough they can be to beat. Moonstone’s weapon is Blackout, a man who was procured from Project Pegasus. He is easy to control and can summon the Darkforce, which will probably prove to be useful against Captain Marvel.

This issue seems to focus mostly on the Masters of Evil but the Avengers do make an appearance here and there. Zemo is in charge but he has a slew of others to help him, most of whom were not seen in the last 3 issues.

The Masters of Evil attack Avengers Mansion while all the heroes are off doing other things. Hercules is supposed to be on monitor duty but he gets Jarvis to fill in for him. Considering how many emergencies the Avengers have to respond to it is a bit crazy that they would leave a job like this to Jarvis.

The Wasp and Black Knight are at the March of Dimes Celebrity Gala while Avengers Mansion is under attack. Joseph Edkin, a reporter for CBS News, asks them about the rumor that Namor has left the Avengers. Paladin shows up just as Edkin is starting to grill the two heroes. The whole exchange is broadcast on live television and seen by Zemo. He also takes note of how Black Knight and Paladin seem to be rivals for the Wasp’s attention.

Another solid read. I’m enjoying the slow build. I’m eager to see how all the little subplots eventually come together.
