Cap’s Last Stand! or The Bunker
by J. M. DeMatteis, Paul Neary, Roy Richardson, Diana Albers, Bob Sharen, Mark Gruenwald
Captain America searches Skull House until he finds the Red Skull in his bunker. The Skull reveals that he injected Captain America with poison and that he only has 3 to 4 hours to live.
Falcon, Nomad, Bernie, and Arnie escape from the room in which they have been locked. They make their way through Skull House until they find themselves in a chapel. The Sisters of Sin show up and attack Cap’s friends.
Interludes: There are a few brief glimpses in this issue of things that are happening elsewhere. Dave Cox is still in the hospital, unconscious. Julie, his wife, is by his side praying he will recover. Jesse Black Crow is in his apartment in Queens. He is haunted by visions of Captain America and the Red Skull. He doesn’t know what to make of the visions. The Avengers (Wasp, Starfox, Vision, Scarlet Witch) meet at Avengers Mansion to discuss what they can do to help Cap.
Mother Superior and Baron Zemo fight over who is the rightful heir to the Red Skull’s legacy. Their fight winds up in the chapel with the others. Mother Superior comes to the realization that Red Skull doesn’t want to bequeath anything to anyone. She kills Zemo.
The Red Skull and Captain America see everything that is going on in the chapel on TV screens in the bunker. Cap makes it clear that he has no interest in fighting the Red Skull and demands that he set them all free. The Red Skull responds by blowing up the rest of Skull House.
Captain America has had enough. He pulls on his mask and leaps at the Red Skull.
Thoughts
I don’t understand what happened between the end of the previous issue and the beginning of this one. The Red Skull was explaining his life story in the previous issue. He and Cap were together and then they weren’t at the beginning of this issue. Weird.
There are lots of floating heads on the cover of this issue. All of them are of people who appear in this issue but not everyone who is in this issue is on the cover.
This is an okay issue but it also feels like filler. Everything is building up to the big fight in issue 300. I wonder if I would be forgiving if Zeck and Beatty were still penciling and inking this series?
