In Darkest Suburbia
by John Byrne
The X-Men (Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Colossus) battle the new Sentinels sent by Sebastian Shaw. The fight occurs amongst the ruins of the Grey household. Cyclops notices, a few minutes into the fight, that the new Sentinels seem strangely familiar. They have powers that mirror those of Nightcrawler, Havok, Polaris.
Elsewhere, Jean Grey is attacked by truckers and responds with superpowers she didn’t realized she possessed. Peter Henry Gyrich argues with Sebastian Shaw, in the Manhattan headquarters of the Hellfire Club, about the damage that the Sentinels are causing. Lilandra is in great pain, in the capitol of the Sh’iar Empire, and lashes out. Professor X examines the Sentinel that Ashley Martin defeated and wonders about the abilities that Ashley may possess.
Reinforcements show up in the form of the Avengers (Vision, Beast, Captain America, Iron Man, Wonder Man) who join the battle against the metallic menaces. Wolverine gets badly injured by a Sentinel while trying to rescue Jean Grey’s parents.
Wonder Man and Vision finish the job that Wolverine started and rescue Jean’s parents from one of the Sentinels. The issue ends with more reinforcements showing up, the Fantastic Four.
Thoughts
Are Nightcrawler and the others in the suits of armor that are fighting the X-Men? There is at least one piece of evidence to suggest that is not the case.
What is going on with Lilandra? Is she now possessed by the Phoenix?
Will Ashley Martin become a student at Professor X’s school? That seems to be implied by the events in this issue. Kitty doesn’t seem too happy at the prospect of having Ashley as a teammate.
What is going on with Jean Grey? She seems to have telekinetic and phasing abilities. The telekinetic superpower at least is in line with her time as Marvel Girl. I’m not sure what to make of her ability to phase through things, like Kitty Pryde.
This is an exciting read with lots of seeds sown for future issues. I can’t foresee where everything is going but I’m enjoying the ride for now.
