The Secret Origin of Nightwing
by Dan Mishkin, Erik Larsen, Mike DeCarlo, John Costanza, Carl Gafford, Robert Greenberger

20 pages

Nightwing tells Jericho about how he lost his parents, met Batman, and became Robin. In the second part of the story he talks about his later adventures with the Teen Titans and the New Teen Titans.

Thoughts

The framing device of this story takes place during the story told in New Teen Titans (1984) 16-19, according to an editor’s note on page two.

One thing that Nightwing doesn’t cover in his history lesson is his transition from Robin to Nightwing. He does talk about what makes him different from Batman and why he felt he had to go his own way eventually.

This story isn’t perfect but I like it quite a bit. I like it more than most of the other stories that appeared in Secret Origins prior to this point. It feels like more than just a retelling of an old story. I think a lot of that comes down to the visual storytelling. The layouts are different from page to page and really pulled me through it all. There are a number of places where panels borders are broken.
