To Kill a Vampire!
by Marv Wolfman, Gene Colan, Tom Palmer, John Costanza, Roy Thomas
Blade gets on Drake’s nerves. The two men start arguing. Rachel steps in to break up their war of words. Blade tells the other vampire hunters, after Edith’s body has been cremated, about how he lost his mother to a vampire.
The henchmen of Dr. Sun gain access to the morgue of Scotland Yard. They kill the attendant who lets them in to the building. They are there to examine one of the bodies on behalf of Dr. Sun.
Dracula stops to take in a boxing match on his way to one of his safe houses. He is spotted, while flying above a town, by an associate of Quincy Harker. The vampire hunters, including Blade, head for the town and locate the house. A fight breaks out and the issue ends with Blade killing Dracula with one of his wooden knives.
Thoughts
I love the cover to this issue by Gil Kane and Tom Palmer. It doesn’t exactly match the contents of the issue but it isn’t too far off the mark. It is kind of funny how Dracula's shirt seems to be the light source on the cover.
The tone set by Edith’s death at the end of the previous issue still hangs heavy in the air at the beginning of this one.
Dracula takes in a boxing match? How funny is that? He does it in the name of trying to gain a better understanding of humanity.
I have mixed feelings about the dissension within the ranks of the vampire hunters but ultimately I think that it is good for the story.
Dracula will return. He won’t be dead for long if he truly is dead.
