DC Comics Presents 62

DC Comics Presents 62
Oct 1983

Born on the Fourth of July
By Bob Rozakis, Dan Mishkin, Irv Novick, Dave Hunt, John Costanza

The Freedom Fighters travel from Earth-X to Earth-1. They are there because Uncle Sam senses that the United States of America is in trouble. Someone has stolen the Declaration of Independence. According to Uncle Sam that's how the Nazis won World War II on Earth-X. Superman is busy dealing with other crises so it is up to Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters (Ray, Doll Man, Black Condor, Human Bomb) to recover the stolen document from the neo-Nazis who stole it.

This reads a bit like an after school special in that it is kind of preachy. There is no super villain. There is very little if anything in the way of character moments. It is all fight and very black and white.

Dick Giordano's Meanwhile… column is dedicated to upcoming comic book conventions at which DC Comics staff will be present. He also mentions a few new books that they will be previewing at the conventions including Redeemer, Atari Force, Thriller, and Infinity Inc. Unlike the other three, Redeemer was never released as a separate comic and wasn't published until about 30 years later when it finally showed up in the pages of Joe Kubert Presents.

DC Coming Comics

DC Comics Presents 62 is the only one on this list that I own or have read. Some of the descriptions read more like assessments of the creative team's talent than the content of the comic books.

The Fury of Firestorm 17 is the first appearance of Firehawk but not the first appearance of her alter ego, Lorraine Reilly, who first showed up in the first issue of the series

Pair Mail letters column - includes a description of what the Freedom Fighters have been up to since their series ended in 1978
