Iron Man (1968) 115

Iron Man (1968) 115
Oct 1978

Betrayal!
by Bill Mantlo, John Romita, Jr., Dan Green

Iron Man leaves Avengers Mansion with the comatose Unicorn and returns to Stark Industries. There he uses the memory extractor on Unicorn to learn what can about the ‘Other’ who has been controlling the Unicorn. Tony toils for a while, after which he removes his armor and heads home.

He arrives home. Everything seems normal until he gets into his penthouse apartment. He is attacked by the Ani-Men as soon as the elevator door opens to his apartment. He is able to knock out one of them but then their leader, Whitney Frost, steps forward and cuts him down. She wants him to restore Count Nefaria, her father. And she’s wearing an outfit that totally clashes with her gold mask.

The Ani-Men, sometimes known as the Unholy Three, first appeared in Daredevil 10 (Oct 1965) in a story that was written by Wally Wood. Prior to this issue of Iron Man they also made appearances in Marvel Team-Up and Uncanny X-Men.

This is Bill Mantlo’s final issue but it is also part one of a two-part story. I’m going to finish the story. The next issue is also Madame Masque’s final appearance for a couple years

There’s some discussion of the Jack of Hearts. This leads in to the announcement that Jack of Hearts will be getting a one-shot in Marvel Premiere 44. Around this time he also showed up in Defenders 62-64, a story that is not written by Bill Mantlo. These issues are not available on Marvel Unlimited but they are on Comixology. Based on the covers it looks like this is a cast of thousands type story and Jack of Hearts probably doesn't have a prominent role in the book.

Announcement: Bill Mantlo and Keith Pollard are both off of Iron Man. Bill is moving on to do write the Micronauts (see DTC 55, 61, 69) and Keith is moving over to draw Fantastic Four.
