The Man Who Stole the World, Part 3
By Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Elizabeth Breitweiser
Velvet tells Rachel to run while she faces off against Damian Lake. He tricks her with a device that projects his image. He is actually standing behind her. He shoots her in the back. She survives thanks to the flying suit but the impact of the bullets still hurts like hell.
Rachel runs out of the club and straight into the arms of Damian’s men. Max shows up and kills them. He gives his car keys to Rachel and tells her to run. He goes in to find Velvet. He was tipped off to her location by his superiors.
Velvet is confused when she sees Max show up. She is even less confident when Damian shoots him. She assumed that they were on the same team. Max falls out a window, presumably to his death. Lake says something about having another team going after Rachel. Velvet jumps out the window and goes soaring after the chase car, using the flying suit. She does the impossible and lands just right, knocks the gunman out of the car and causes the driver to crash the car.
Rachel pulls over to see if Velvet is okay. Velvet grabs her and they go running off into the night. There is no sign of Damian Lake.
Lots of action but not a whole lot of resolution. What actually happened, other than the obvious? Why didn’t Damian Lake kill Velvet when he had the chance? What is his aim? Is he in league with the current leaders of ARC-7? Where is Colt? Is Max really dead? What does the Watergate (and presumably the Watergate break in) have to do with the story? What hasn’t been revealed about Rachel’s connection to X-14? So many questions. Just two installments left in the story.
