Kurt Busiek’s Astro City (1996) 5

Kurt Busiek’s Astro City (1996) 5
Jan 1997

Learning the Game
By Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson

Altar Boy starts his apprenticeship with the Confessor. Altar Boy is bursting with energy and enthusiasm but lacking in discipline. The Confessor teaches him but some lessons take longer to learn than others.

The pivotal moment in the story comes when Altar Boy takes down a villain who has been impersonating Crackerjack. This is the same villain who last appeared in Astro City (1995) 5. He is an alien. His earthly abode was destroyed by Crackerjack’s incompetence. Crackerjack is unaware of the transgression he committed or of the alien’s anger at him.

Altar Boy doesn’t make a big deal out of how he did most of the work. He thinks Crackerjack will be willing to share the credit but he isn’t. The alien shape changer escapes while Crackerjack is taking the credit for stopping the impostor.

Another good read. Halfway through I wasn’t so sure about this chapter in Altar Boy’s story but the ending clinched it for me. I think it is the little moments that add up and make these stories so much fun to read.
