The Measure of a Man!
by J. M. DeMatteis, Paul Neary, Josef Rubinstein, Diana Albers, Bob Sharen, Mark Gruenwald
Nomad fights the Slayer. Captain America is till out cold. Slayer pulls different weapons out of his inter dimensional cloak. Nomad is on the ropes but manages to hold his own in the fight.
Cap wakes up and tries to join the fight but he is surrounded by a force field. He looks up and sees Baron Zemo and Mother Superior floating in the air. The Slayer finally gets the upper hand. He’s about to kill Nomad with a jagged looking sword but at the last second something inside him prevents him from killing Nomad.
Mother Superior tries to force Dave Cox to kill Nomad but he resists. The strain is too great and he passes out. Captain America breaks free from the force field and throws his shield at Mother Superior and Baron Zemo. They disappear in a flash of light before his shield reaches them.
Cap and Nomad take Dave Cox to the Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village. Captain America explains to Nomad about his history with Baron Zemo, both of them. He also explains about the costume Dave was wearing. It was the same one that Eric Payne (aka Devil Slayer) wore although it had been modified for Dave Cox.
Mother Superior and Baron Zemo return to Skull House. She introduces him to her disciples, the Sisters of Sin.
Steve Rogers returns to his apartment. He goes to see Bernie. He tells her he can’t accept her marriage proposal. She doesn’t care for his answer. She argues with him. She kisses him until he says yes. There is a knock at the door. Someone is there with a package for Bernie. She thinks it is from Steve but he is as surprised as she is by the arrival of a package. She opens it up. It is a mask of the Red Skull.
Thoughts
J. M. DeMatteis may still be writing this book but the change in artist makes a difference. Paul Neary’s pencils are significantly different from Mike Zeck’s pencils. I’m not saying they are better or worse I’m just sayin that they are different.
It looks like that’s it for Dave Cox as the Slayer but I could be wrong. The threat to Cap, Nomad, and possibly others (Bernie?) in the next issue will be the Sisters of Sin. I haven’t read the rest of this storyline, which runs through 301, but I know that it is all leading to a showdown with the Red Skull. The covers tell me that much.
This is a decent read. I am glad that they explained the connection between Dave Cox and Devil Slayer although it is done fairly quickly.
American Graffiti
The four letters from readers that take up most of this page are all praise filled. They mostly are about the events in Captain America 290. The question of the month is “What is your biggest pet peeve?” It is revealed in the Special Announcements section that Ken Bruzenak designed the new logo for the letters page.
Bullpen Bulletins
Jim Shooter fills 2/3 of the column with letters from Herb Trimpe and Virginia Romita. The rest of the column is filled with the announcement of a partnership with Adventure International, a computer game company.
The Hype Box Highlights Alien Legion 1 and Marvel Graphic Novel 10: Heartburst by Rick Veitch.
