Dwayne, a former superhero known as Daxx, answers questions and hangs out with other former superheroes at a convention. He’s married now, has a wife and a son. He has put on some weight. Someone breaks into his hotel room and steals his power staff.
Things don’t get much better for Dwayne when he heads to the bar to hang out with the other former superheroes. He tries hitting on Jess, his former crime fighting partner. Her code name was Fearess, but she is with Mark now, another former superhero. His code name was Sentinel. She doesn’t get angry, she just turns him down and walks off with Mark.
Dwayne spends the night drinking with Jim and Greg, a couple more former superheroes. He tries hitting on Jess a second time. This time she hits back, angrily. Dwayne thinks he spots the guy who stole his staff but he can’t be certain. He almost gets into a fight with the guy but Greg breaks up the potential conflict.
Dwayne returns to his room and falls asleep. He doesn’t hear Jess knocking on his door.
I like Dwayne. He isn’t perfect. He has flaws. He has problems but he is a good person. I’m curious to learn more about his past with Jess. There are flashback scenes to his past as a superhero but none of them involve her.
There is a 2-page dream sequence early on in the book. The art in that part of the story is wildly different than the rest of the art. I didn't know what to make of that part of the story.
I like the look and feel of this story. I wish that there was more to it. It feels like the first installment of a longer story. It kind of has an ending. It ends where it begins, with Dwayne in his hotel room, but I hope that the creators finish the story in the not too distant future.
