All Good Things…
by Mike Carlin, Paul Neary, Dennis Janke, Diana Albers, Bob Sharen, Mark Gruenwald
Captain America hands over the body of the Red Skull to Mother Superior, the Red Skull’s daughter. She departs with the body and the Sisters of Sin. The Avengers show up in the Quinjet. They help Captain America and his friends gather their things and head back to Avengers Mansion.
The Avengers do what they can to help Cap. Starfox and Hercules return to Skullhouse and get the Red Skull’s machines. Vision and Hank Pym get to work on analyzing the machines. Captain America retells his origin story to give his teammates some idea of how he became the superhero that he is.
Vision coms up with a plan and uses the Red Skull’s machinery to try and reverse the aging process inflicted on his teammate. Cap is strapped down in the machine. The machine is in the process of doing it's work when Mother Superior and the Sisters of Sin show up. They have destroyed the body of the Red Skull in a bonfire. Mother Superior has come for Captain America.
The other heroes watch helplessly from the next room. Vision forbids them from entering because any interference on their part might endanger the reverse aging process. Cap is at less than full strength but he keeps Mother Superior and the Sisters of Sin at bay until the process is complete. He has been restored to full strength and the villains have also been reverse aged to he point where they are girls once again.
This issue was not written by J.M. DeMatteis but it does wrap up the story that began several months before. Captain America has been restored to full strength and is ready to have his exploits told by someone else.
What happened next to some of the bit players in this story?
- Mother Superior and the Sisters of Sin return 4 years later in Captain America 355 (Jul 1989), not long after the return of the Red Skull
- Bernie Rosenthal was engaged to Steve Rogers at this time. They did not get married and she eventually faded from regular appearances in the series.
- Arnie Roth more or less fades from this series after this story.
- He makes a few more appearances but it never again a recurring character in this series.
- Nomad (Jack Monroe) continues to be a regular in this series through issue 309. He makes sporadic appearances in the series after that and eventually gets his own ongoing series a few years down the road.
I’ve always liked the cover to this issue. Mother Superior’s high heels seem a bit out of place but I guess that was the norm at this time.
The combination of inks and pencils in this issue are much more to my liking than that in many of the prior issues. They seem cleaner and less rushed.
American Graffiti
J.M. DeMatteis says goodbye. Four fans write letters praising Captain America 294.
Bullpen Bulletins
John Romita, Jr. is Marvel’s first Hunk of the Month, a feature suggested by Colleen Doran.
