Kane (1993) 9

Kane (1993) 9
May 1995

His Story
by Paul Grist

This is the backstory for Oscar Darke. It begins with teenage Martha Darke running away from home and winding up in New Eden. She becomes a prostitute, has run ins with the police, and raises her son, Oscar.

Martha comes down pretty hard on Oscar when he gets in trouble. She also writes letters, to herself. Martha is murdered, shot at least three times. Oscar avenges her death by killing Officer Costello, the policeman who harassed him and his mother.

The issue ends with Oscar getting shot at close range by a young woman.

Thoughts

I didn’t spot Kane or any of his colleagues or Mister Floppsie Whoppsie in this issue.

Presumably Oscar was born sometime after Martha moved to New Eden. Presumably he is Martha's biological son but the matter of his birth isn't explored in this issue.

Is Officer Costello Oscar’s father? Martha fought him off at least once. Who is the young lady who shoots Oscar Darke? Was she Costello’s widow or daughter? Oscar was still a boy when he shot Costello. He was fully grown when he was shot. It looked like Oscar was at a funeral, in a cemetery when he got shot. He visited a grave, possibly his mother’s grave, before he was shot.

This is a really good issue. It was quietly intense. It isn’t terribly confusing or hard to follow but not everything gets explained. There are quite a few wordless panels and pages.

There is a letters column in this issue. All of the letters are in response to issue 7.
