Blood and Thunder!
by John Ostrander, Timothy Truman, Janice Chiang, Janice Cohen, Mike Gold
Tamara hires Grimjack to help them rescue Torin Mac Quillon and his men from Ariosto who is holding them hostage and planning to kill them. Grimjack agrees to do the job but demands the Jolly Roger, Tamara’s ship, in exchange for his services.
The difficulty level of the job is elevated thanks to Sphinx, a wizard that Ariosto employs. Complicating things further is a band of Alpha Centaurians who have been sent by a being called Cal to capture Starslayer.
Grimjack completes the job as promised and takes possession of the Jolly Roger only to turn around and sell it to Mac Quillon.
This is the first (and only?) Grimjack / Starslayer crossover. This is the last Grimjack story to appear in Starslayer.
This is a fun read and cut from the same cloth as the stories that preceded it. It lacks depth and didn’t blow my socks off but I knew what to expect based on the other Grimjack stories I have read up to this point.
This issue also includes the following sections that were each a page in length.
Quill & Sword - the Starslayer letters page which this month includes lots of praise for Grimjack, as it has for the past few months
First Notes - in which Mike Gold responds to questions about how to do your best to get your fan letter published and then writes about things to come including the debut of Grimjack’s own comic book
The Origins of Independent Comic Book (Part 6) - the concluding chapter of this series in which Charles Meyerson writes about the challenges facing indie comic books in the direct market
