A Slight Case of Vertigo..!
by Mike W. Barr, Trevor Von Eeden, Dick Giordano, Tom Ziuko, Ben Oda, Len Wein
Oliver Queen goes back to work the next day but has trouble focusing on the business of Horton Chemicals. He flashes back to his history with Abby Horton and the events of the previous issue.
Ollie goes out that night as Green Arrow and breaks into the county coroner’s office. He finds the autopsy report for Abby and reads through it. A security guards tries to arrest him but Green Arrow uses one of his trick arrows and then hightails it out of there.
Ollie tries to use a computer to find something out about Abby’s wedding ring. He doesn’t learn anything about her ring but a visit from Max, Abby’s brother, inspires Ollie to lie to Max and Abby’s close relatives. He tells them all that he knows who killed Abby. Thorndyke, the family’s lawyer, tells Ollie to stop spreading unsubstantiated information.
Ted, Abby’s son, almost kills Ollie the next night at a party at his sister’s home. Green Arrow chases after Ted. Count Vertigo shows up just as the chase ends at the top of a cliff. Ted falls to his death. Green Arrow is also affected by Vertigo’s superpower but manages to stop him with a trick arrow.
Green Arrow finds a clue left behind by Ted when he gets to his body.
Thoughts
I love the cover but it is also a bit misleading. Count Vertigo shows up towards the end of the issue but he’s not the focal point.
Was Ollie Ted’s intended target? Could it have been someone else? What is the significance of the hexagon? It is the shape of the gem in Abby’s ring and the shape that Ted drew in the sand before he died but what does it mean? Is Max as honest and upright as Ollie seems to think he is?
The interior art work continues to really impress me. The layouts and the coloring really make it a fun story to read. I think I’m getting over the problem I had with the weird flow of the story on some pages.
