Fighting Side-by-Side with... Captain America and Bucky!
by Stan Lee. Jack Kirby, and Dick Ayers
Setting: London, England
After a trip to the movies with Lady Pamela Hawley, where they see a newsreel of Captain America and Bucky in action, Nick Fury runs into Steve Rogers in a pub. Steve is about to get beaten up by Sgt Bull McGivney. Fury steps in, and the rest of the Howlers join him. Once the MPs arrive and have sorted everything out McGivney and his boys wind up in the hospital. Sgt Fury and the Howling Commandos are rewarded by their CO, Captain Happy Sam Sawyer with hours of intense training (hand-to-hand combat, etc)
Meanwhile, Cap and Bucky are sent across the channel (France?) to investigate do some recon on a report of a secret arms buildup by the Nazis, in the process they wind up saving some American pilots who were shot down and discover slave laborers from France, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, after rescuing the pilots, and sending them towards the coast, Cap tells them to send word to "Send the Howlers to Cap"
The Howlers are more than ready to get away from their CO and see some action, they are split up but Sgt Fury and Reb Ralston board a train which it turns out is carrying slave laborers, mixed in with the slave laborers is Steve Rogers, whom Fury recognizes from the night before, Bucky shows up disguised as a Hitler Youth (Jugend), no explanation is given as to how Cpa and Bucky got here
The train arrives at a construction site known as Operation Einfall (Invasion), the sodliers are put to work along with the other slave laborers, Fury tries to give Rogers his gun but Rogers won't take it, Rogers gets separated from Fury and Ralston, there is an explosion, Cap shows up with Bucky, the Americans wreck more havoc at the Nazi construction site, in the end they all escape but wind up in the hospital when they get back to England
story doesn't quite live up to what I hoped it would be, good but not great, still it is the first Cap and Sgt Fury story set during WWII
more or less a standard story based on the other Sgt Fury stories I have read
