Echoes
by J. M. DeMatteis, Ron Frenz, Steve Leialoha, Diana Albers, Bob Sharen, Mark Gruenwald
Captain America hangs out with his friends, blissfully unaware that some villains are haunting his friends.
Steve takes Bernie to Avengers Mansion. He shows her around but none of his teammates are around, except the Wasp. He returns to his apartment later only to find that Jack Monroe, Nomad, has just woken up from a bad dream. Cap encourages Nomad to come out on patrol with him to help clear his head.
Captain America and Nomad don’t know it but someone is watching them as they leave the apartment, Baron Zemo. He does not approach them as they leave but he is quickly joined by a woman whom he has not met before, Mother Night.
Cap and Nomad head for Sam Wilson’s place. They stop and chat with the Falcon for a bit. All three of them head for Arnold Roth’s place. They don’t know it but Arnie recently received a visit from Baron Zemo and Mother Night. Arnie thinks that it was just a nightmare but after Captain America and his friends leave he sees evidence to indicate that it was not.
Mother Night takes Baron Zemo to meet her father, the Red Skull. Captain America and Nomad are attacked by a very large black bird. It knocks Cap off a rooftop but he survives the fall unscathed thanks to his shield and his own skills.
Thoughts
This feels like prologue. I believe that DeMatteis is laying the groundwork here for the final arc of his run on Captain America which ends with issue 301.
Ron Frenz pencils this issue. He is just a fill in artist. He does an adequate job in my opinion. Mike Zeck and John Beatty will not be returning to the book. They have moved on to another project, as noted in the special announcements section of the letters page.
There is a reference made to a classical piece of music, Chopin’s Funeral March. I had to look it up on YouTube and listen to it. The opening notes are very familiar to me and have been used in countless places including video games.
Marvel Bullpen Bulletins
Jim Shooter mentions the trip he and the editors made over the summer, without going into very much detail. He also makes an update to Shooter’s First Law of Mail.
Letters to the Living Legend
Mark Gruenwald is back from San Diego. Everyone loved part 1 of the 4 part story that began in Captain America 286, especially the cover.
