Captain America (1968) 291

Captain America (1968) 291
Mar 1984

To Tame a Tumbler!
by Bill Mantlo, Herb Trimpe, Jack Abel, Diana Albers, Andy Yanchus, Mark Gruenwald

Captain America first fights and then teams up with the Tumbler, the namesake of a man he has fought before.

Captain America is patrolling the city at night on his motorcycle when he spots the Tumbler leaving the Guardian Life Insurance Company building. The two men fight. Captain America has fought a man named the Tumbler before but that man died years ago. This new Tumbler is a little too quick for Captain America but he leaves behind the bag he was carrying when he emerged from the building.

The Tumbler daydreams while he heads home. He recalls his brother, the original Tumbler, and his mother. Both of them are now dead, his mother in part due to the actions of the insurance company. The Tumbler arrives home only to find Captain America waiting for him. The two men fight once again but this time Cap is able to subdue the Tumbler.

The Living Legend talks some sense into the Tumbler. Together they go back to the insurance company to get to the bottom of the matter. They are met by a bunch of armed men who try to silence them permanently after they discover what the company has been doing. The combined might of Captain America and the Tumbler proves to be enough to defeat the hoods who work for the insurance company.

Thoughts

This issue is not written by DeMatteis and has nothing to do with previous issue. This has has the feel of an “inventory” story. The tone of the story reminds a little of Captain America 271 (The Mystery of Mr. X), which was also not written by DeMatteis.

Bullpen Bulletins

Tom DeFalco interviews Mark Gruenwald, Mike Carlin, and Eliot R. Brown about the work did in creating the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.

This month’s Mighty Marvel Checklist takes up half a page. The names of the writer, penciler, and inker are included for every issue listed but only a few of the comics have descriptions.

Letters to the Living Legend

Letters of praise for Captain America 287, the second installment of the Deathlok story. Mark Gruenwald responds to a question about alternate futures like the ones presented in Days of Future Past (Uncanny X-Men 141-142) and in the Deathlok story. The special announcements section thanks the guest creative team for creating this month’s story, announces the Book of the Dead and inactive issues of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and mentions that there will be a new (regular?) art team starting with the next issue of Captain America.
