Johnny Hazard (4)

Vol. 1: 1944-1946
by Frank Robbins

Chapter 4: Colonel Kiri
Jan 31 - Aug 11, 1945

07/20/21
Jan 31-Feb 1, 1945 - Johnny meets with Col. Chase and is assigned to a P-51 group while he waits for the rest of his unit to arrive. He is led to the group's quarters by Hop Long, a Chinese servant.

The P-51 Mustang was a fighter-bomber that was used by US armed forces in World War 2 and the Korean War.

07/21/21
Feb 2-3, 1945 - Hop Long shows Johnny to his quarters which he will be sharing with Captain Slocum.

Is Captain Slocum a US Navy pilot? They call him the Admiral and he has decorated his living space with lots of naval memorabilia.

07/22/21
Feb 5-6, 1945 - Johnny looks through some of the pictures that Slocum has hanging around his hammock. Slocum seems to have a lot of ancestors that served in the Navy, going back to the mid-1700s.

I did some research and the Navy did not use the P-51 very much in World War 2 so I think that Slocum must also be in the Army. Moby Dick II, Slocum’s P-51, is shown in the final panel.

07/25/21
Feb 7-8, 1945 - Captain Slocum leads his squadron on a mission to destroy enemy installations.

Slocum has a beard, wears a sailor’s cap, and has a pipe between his teeth as he leads his squadron. His men joke with him using nautical terminology. He looks much more like a sailor than he does a soldier or airman.

07/26/21
Feb 9-10, 1945 - Captain Slocum returns from his mission. Johnny tries to introduce himself but Slocum shushes him and goes to talk to the pictures of his ancestors.

Slocum looks and acts weird. I’m not sure what to make of him. He will probably turn out to be alright and good in a fight.

07/27/21
Feb 12-13, 1945 - Slocum apologizes to Johnny and starts to explain things to him.

07/28/21
Feb 14-15, 1945 - Slocum explains that he joined the Army and became a pilot because he is allergic to salt water. It makes him seasick.

Japanese forces are advancing on the airbase where Johnny and Slocum are stationed. The base’s commanding officer meets with his top men to determine a strategy for fighting the enemy.

07/29/21
Feb 16-17, 1945 - Hazard and Slocum fly missions for days on end, in defense of the base. They are starting to wear down but they aren’t ready to break.

Where is this story going? Slocum will presumably be part of this story arc for more than just a week or two.

07/30/21
Feb 19-20, 1945 - Johnny sends Brandy flowers. He and Slocum continue to fly missions against the Japanese.

Hopefully something interesting is going to happen soon. I like to think that Robbins is just setting the stage for something better but I’m starting to get bored.

07/31/21
Feb 21-22, 1945 - Hazard and Slocum return from yet another mission. Hop Long brings them some food but they have already passed out from exhaustion by the time the food arrives. Despite the superhuman efforts of the American air power the Japanese are still threatening to overrun the air base.

08/01/21
Feb 23-24, 1945 - Johnny visits Brandy in the hospital to tell her that the Japanese are getting too close to the base. All non-essential personnel are being evacuated.

Johnny says something about the Chinese army needing to hold a place called Wengtu but I can’t find any such place.

08/02/21
Feb 26-27, 1945 - Johnny delivers Brandy to a C-47 transport plane which will take her along with many others who are evacuating away from the front lines.

08/03/21
Feb 28-Mar 1, 1945 - Johnny is kissing Brandy goodbye when Slocum comes running up. The Japanese are hitting Wengtu hard. Johnny runs off without saying goodbye which leaves Brandy a little upset but she gets over it.

08/04/21
Mar 2-3, 1945 - Brandy talks to the Chinese woman sitting next to her on the plane who has her baby in her arms. A Japanese fighter plane shoots up the C-47, killing the Chinese woman.

I can’t tell if the baby survived. That was brutal. I really want to turn the page and see what happens next.

08/05/21
Mar 5-6, 1945 - Brandy grabs the dead woman’s baby, which is still alive. She hits the deck as the pilot of the C-47 starts to take evasive maneuvers to avoid the 5 Zeros (Japanese fighter planes) that are attacking them.

Somebody needs to come to the assistance of the C-47 or else they’re goners.

08/06/21
Mar 7-8, 1945 - the C-47 gets shot up some more. The pilot and copilot are both shot and possibly dead. The plane comes in for a crash landing while it is still under attack.

It’s a miracle that the plane didn’t just nose dive into the ground. Maybe the pilot or copilot was bringing it in low when they were shot.

08/07/21
Mar 9-10, 1945 - the C-47 crash lands in a field of rice paddies. Brandy manages to get herself and the baby, which is still alive, out of the remnants of the C-47. She heads out just as some Japanese soldiers are headed in the direction of the crash site.

It looks like there are other survivors of the crash but there is no indication if Brandy says anything to them or does anything to help them before she heads out with the baby.

08/08/21
Mar 12-13, 1945 - Brandy is spotted by two Chinese workers in the field. The Japanese soldiers come running up to the Chinese workers. They haven’t noticed Brandy just yet. Their focus is on the plane that crashed nearby.

Will the Chinese workers give Brandy away to the Japanese soldiers? Will the baby start crying and give her away? Regardless, what will she do next?

08/09/21
Mar 14-15, 1945 - the Chinese field workers do not give Brandy away. They instead point them in the direction of the airplane wreckage. The Japanese soldiers are headed for the wreckage when the baby in Brandy’s arms starts crying.

What now? Will she escape? I think she’s going to try but wind up getting captured. I assume that Johnny will return at some point and that the rest of this arc is not going to be all Brandy.

08/10/21
Mar 16-17, 1945 - a pig comes scrambling out of the trees. The Japanese soldiers assume that it is what they just heard. The Japanese soldiers go into the wreckage of the plane and kill the survivors that they find.

08/11/21
Mar 19-20, 1945 - Brandy runs off while the Japanese soldiers are killing the survivors in the plane. The Chinese farmer and his son talk about what just happened. The son wants to attack the Japanese soldiers but his father urges him to consider another course of action.

08/12/21
Mar 21-22, 1945 - Johnny learns that the C-47 that Brandy was on went down and that there is no sign of survivors.

08/14/21
Mar 23-24, 1945 - Johnny and “Admiral” Slocum flyover the wreck of the C-47 and see some people near the wreck of the plane. They get a little closer and realize that what they are seeing are Japanese soldiers.

There are some great panels in these two strips depicting the P-51s in flight from various angles. The final panel is a closeup of Johnny, ready for some payback.

08/15/21
Mar 26-27, 1945 - Johnny and “Admiral” Slocum open fire on the Japanese soldiers killing all of them except the officer.

Johnny wants blood. He wants payback for what he knows and what he assumes happened.

08/16/21
Mar 28-29, 1945 - Johnny strafes the Japanese officer. He thinks he’s killed him and flies off but the Japanese officer is still alive and heads into the jungle to avoid being spotted again.

My guess at this point is that the Japanese officer is Colonel Kiri. I love the action shots in these strips. Franks Robbins goes a wonderful job with the angles and the sense of motion in them.

08/17/21
Mar 30-31, 1945 - Brandy wanders through the woods with the baby in her arms. She is unsure what to do or who she can trust. She is spotted by the Japanese officer.

What will he do with her? Will she fight back? What will happen to the baby?

08/18/21
Apr 2-3, 1945 - Chen, one of the Chinese farmers last seen on Mar 20, helps Brandy avoid the Japanese officer by putting himself in danger.

I was fooled! The Japanese officer heard but did not see Brandy. Chen got to her first.

08/19/21
Apr 4-5, 1945 - Chen tells the Japanese officer that he was picking mushrooms. His sister has just returned to them after her husband was killed by Americans. The Japanese officer is interested in Chen’s sister. Chen says she is homely and mute but the Japanese officer doesn’t believe him and insists that Chen bring her around to see him the next night.

I’ve got a bad feeling that I know where this is headed: Brandy in yellow face. Ugh! I hope I’m wrong.

08/20/21
Apr 6-7, 1945 - Chen finds Brandy, after the Japanese officer has departed, and asks her to stay put for now. Chen will be back after dark. Brandy talks to the baby while she waits.

The way that Brandy talks to the baby implies that she’s been breastfeeding it but that’s impossible. I’m not sure how else to interpret her comments. What else could a baby that small be eating?

Brandy also mention her last name, Jackson. I believe that’s the first time that bit of information has been mentioned.

08/21/21
Apr 9-10, 1945 - Brandy waits in the woods with the baby. It starts to rain. Chen shows up about a half hour later. It is a little earlier than she was expecting him. She wonders why he showed up early.

Maybe he showed up early because he knew that she didn’t have any protection from the rain.

08/22/21
Apr 11-12, 1945 - Chen has brought clothes for Brandy. He holds the baby and turns his back while she changes. He explains the situation with Colonel Kiri, the Japanese officer, to her while facing away from her.

The Japanese officer finally gets a name! The clothes that Chen brought include a wrap for Brandy’s head, to hide her blonde hair.

08/23/21
Apr 13-14, 1945 - Johnny returns to base. It is pouring rain when he lands. He is taxiing down the runway when he thinks he sees Brandy. He turns and drives his plane off the edge of the runway.

08/24/21
Apr 16-17, 1945 - Chen explains to Brandy that She has until tomorrow night to present herself to Colonel Kiri. Brandy doesn’t like it but she isn’t about to abandon Chen and his family.

These two strips are heavy on exposition but Frank Robbins does a decent job mixing the visuals up while Brandy and Chen walk in the rain.

08/25/21
Apr 18-19, 1945 - Brandy meets Chen’s parents, who don’t speak English. Chen’s mother has prepared a vegetable dye to tint Brandy’s skin color so that it resembles that of a Chinese person.

Brandy has her doubts about how effective the dye will be. I do too not to mention the fact that in the reprint edition I see no difference in skin color between Brandy and the Chinese people. Tinting her hair might be more effective but then there’s still the matter of her facial features. I think they need to acknowledge that Chinese people don’t look the same as White people but I don’t care for the notion that it is fairly easy for White people to put on yellow face.

08/26/21
Apr 20-21, 1945 - Brandy relaxes after bathing and darkening her skin. She ponders what to do about her situation but doesn’t come up with anything.

Brandy acknowledges that she doesn’t look Chinese. She knows that Colonel Kiri will very likely see right through her disguise. Her skin doesn’t look noticeably darker with the exception of one panel. It is also worth noting that her skin looks the same tone as that of Chen and his parents but then again this comic strip is not in color. It also may be that the strip has been altered.

08/28/21
Apr 23-24, 1945 - Hazard and Slocum are at a briefing for pilots. Their commander tells them about a new fighter-bomber that the Japanese are using against them. It is being deployed from a secret base which has yet to be located. Johnny perks up when he sees the suspected location of the secret base. It is the same area where Brandy disappeared.

I guess Johnny hasn’t given up all hope that Brandy may still be alive. If not that then he’s just ready for more payback. These two strips are very wordy.

08/30/21
Apr 25-26, 1945 - the briefing concludes with the commander showing the pilots that the new planes have special markings that they need to look for on any Japanese planes they spot or encounter. Brandy wakes up to a roaring noise. Chen invites her to have a look.

Dollars to donuts, the noise that Wakes Brandy up is the secret Japanese airbase.

08/31/21
Apr 27-28, 1945 - Brandy and Chen watch Japanese air planes (with the special markings on them that Johnny and Admiral Slocum just learned about) take off. Chen tells Brandy what he knows about them.

I can see the wheels in Brandy’s head turning. She knows how important this is. I really like some of the angles that Robbins uses in these panels.

09/01/21
Apr 30-May 1, 1945 - Brandy announces to Chen that she must get the dirt on this secret base.

The face darkening makeup that Brandy applied shows up in one panel but not the others. It is just plain bizarre how it keeps disappearing and then reappearing. Is that Robbins doing or is this something that was done when the strip was prepared to be republished?

09/02/21
May 2-3, 1945 - The Americans and Chinese execute their plan to try and locate the secret Japanese airbase. They know the Japanese are about to attack one of their depots. Johnny and the Admiral are supposed to hang back and follow any Japanese planes that break off from the attack group.

Johnny’s plane is marked with the number 21 and the name Hazard’s Hazard.

09/03/21
May 4-5, 1945 - the American fighter planes descend on the Japanese fighter planes that are attacking the depot. They knock most of them out of the sky but allow one to get away, on purpose.

I’m getting a bit tired of the racist names used to refer to the Japanese. They were the enemy and they committed atrocities during the war. Dehumanizing them makes it easier to justify treating them harshly but it also had long lasting effects that outlasted the war.

09/04/21
May 7-8, 1945 - Johnny and the Admiral start tailing the lone Japanese fighter that has fled the fight over the depot. They maintain radio silence and keep their distance to keep from being spotted.

I was so eager to see what comes next that I flipped the page and continued to read without even thinking. I usually stop on a dime when I finish reading a page.

09/05/21
May 9-10, 1945 - Hazard and Slocum do their best to keep the Japanese pilot from spotting them but then he notices a reflection of sunlight coming from behind him.

The last panel of the first strip and the first panel of the second strip are very similar but not identical.

09/06/21
May 11-12, 1945 - The Japanese pilot looks up and spots the American planes following him. He contacts the base to which he is headed for advice. Admiral Slocum starts to wonder if they have been spotted by the Japanese pilot.

The tension continues to build. What will come of it?

09/07/21
May 14-15, 1945 - Colonel Kiri gets on the radio and tells his pilot to execute plan 4W. The colonel knows that the Americans are trying to find the secret base. He also orders 5 fighter planes be prepared for takeoff immediately.

What is plan 4W? Is the pilot supposed to attack the two American fighter-bombers? What role do the 5 planes that Colonel Kiri just ordered on deck play in plan 4W?

09/08/21
May 16-17, 1945 - the secret of the hidden Japanese airbase is revealed but only to the reader.

Would that really work? Did the Japanese have that level of technology to make planes like the ones in Johnny Hazard?

09/09/21
May 18-19, 1945 - the five fighters that Colonel Kiri ordered up, take off on their mission to destroy Hazard and Slocum who are still tailing the lone Japanese fighter back to the hidden airbase.

The tension builds as this week’s worth of strips comes to a close. Johnny and the Admiral are about to be outnumbered 3 to 1. How will they handle those odds?

09/10/21
May 21-22, 1945 - Johnny and Slocum watch the Japanese fighter-bomber land in a rice field. They are so surprised by what they see that they don’t see the 5 fighter-bombers that are bearing down on them. This is exactly what Colonel Kiri was counting on.

The tension continues to build. It looks like Colonel Kiri has Johnny and Slocum right where he wants them. How are they going to get out of this mess?

09/11/21
May 23-24, 1945 - Johnny is ready to strafe the Japanese plane on the ground when Admiral Slocum points out that something is fishy about the situation. The 5 Japanese fighter-bombers attack, catching the two Americans by surprise. Johnny’s plane is hit and starts to descend in flames.

What’s next? Johnny will almost certainly crash-land and be captured by Colonel Kiri. Will Slocum be able to get away? He might be a great pilot but I doubt that even he can successfully take on 5 enemy planes.

09/12/21
May 25-26, 1945 - Johnny bails out of his plane and is quickly captured by Japanese soldiers. Admiral Slocum is in trouble now that all 5 of the Japanese fighter-bombers are coming after him.

Johnny jumps out of his plane when it is very close to the ground. I didn’t think that was possible but he seems to survive the fall.

09/13/21
May 28-29, 1945 - Admiral Slocum doesn’t bail out of his plane after it is hit. He goes down with it as it crashes into the same village where Brandy is staying.

Slocum might still be alive but I’m not certain. The second of these strips was Brandy’s first appearance in almost 4 weeks.

09/14/21
May 30-31, 1945 - Slocum crash lands in a house and survives. Brandy sees the tail markings, recognizes that it is Slocum’s plane, and realizes that the other plane must have been Johnny’s.

Brandy and Slocum have never met on panel but I suppose that Brandy was at the base long enough to have met him.

09/15/21
Jun 1-2, 1945 - Slocum takes off running. Brandy tries calling to him but Chen grabs her and pulls her back indoors. Slocum is distracted by Brandy, whom he doesn’t recognize, and doesn’t see the Japanese soldiers headed his way.

It’s not looking good for the Admiral.

09/16/21
Jun 4-5, 1945 - Slocum is blindsided and captured by Japanese soldiers. Chen restrains Brandy who wants to help Slocum.

The first of these strips is mostly action with almost no dialogue or sound effects.

09/17/21
Jun 6-7, 1945 - Brandy and Chen find out that Johnny and Admiral are going to be executed the following day. Slocum tells Johnny about the “Chinese” woman who called out to him just before he was captured.

Brandy has a plan to rescue Johnny and Slocum. I’m not so sure that it is going to work but how else are they going to extricate themselves from this situation?

09/18/21
Jun 8-9, 1945 - Colonel Kiri gets ready for his “date” with Chen’s “sister”. Brandy, escorted by Chen, arrives at the gate to Colonel Kiri’s compound.

I’m puzzled by the fact that no one seems to recognize that Brandy is not Chinese. A few weeks back she put on some cream to darken her skin but I don’t think that’s enough to pull off this sort of subterfuge. I wonder how long this madness will prevail?

09/19/21
Jun 11-12, 1945 - the sentry at the Colonel’s compound steals a kiss from Brandy. She takes the opportunity to take something from the sentry.

My best guess is that Brandy stole keys from the sentry but it isn’t clear just yet what she took.

09/20/21
Jun 13-14, 1945 - Brandy is shown in to Colonel Kiri’s room. He gives orders that they are not to be disturbed for the rest of the night. Brandy pulls back her hood and speaks to him in English.

I’m not sure what languages the Colonel speaks, probably Japanese and Chinese but I don’t think he’s been shown speaking English yet. I’m guessing he does because otherwise her words will have considerably less impact.

Brandy’s skin still seems to have some of the markings to indicate that it is darker than it naturally is which leads me to wonder if the reader is supposed to accept that she can still pass as Chinese even after revealing her blonde hair and speaking in English.

09/21/21
Jun 15-16, 1945 - Colonel Kiri is stunned but he quickly recovers. Brandy keeps him at bay by showing him her right hand. She is holding a grenade and has already pulled the pin.

Brandy must have stolen the grenade from the guard who kissed her but it is an American style grenade, not a Japanese one. Clearly this is a mistake. There’s no where else Brandy could have procured a grenade from.

09/22/21
Jun 18-19, 1945 - Brandy talks Colonel Kiri into writing up a note that will get Johnny and Slocum free and clear.

Is Brandy planning to sacrifice herself? How is she going to escape? I don’t think things will go as smoothly as Brandy hopes.

09/23/21
Jun 20-21, 1945 - Brandy convinces Colonel Kiri to comply with her orders. She won’t be leaving until she knows that Johnny and Slocum are home free.

Brandy has decided to sacrifice herself or so it seems. I doubt that Johnny and the Admiral, especially Johnny, will be happy with that.

09/24/21
Jun 22-23, 1945 - Brandy sends Chen with the note guaranteeing free passage back to the US airbase. He is to escort them to safety without telling them about her part in it.

Johnny is going to find out. It is just a question of when and to what length he’s going to have to go to rescue Brandy.

09/25/21
Jun 25-26, 1945 - Johnny and Admiral suspect a trap and refuse to leave. Chen insists that there’s no trap but then accidentally mentions Brandy’s name.

What now?

09/26/21
Jun 27-28, 1945 - Admiral Slocum convinces Johnny to cool it for a minute so that Chen can talk. Chen tells them where they can find Brandy and what she’s up to.

Johnny isn’t going to leave Brandy behind but how’s he going to deal with Colonel Kiri?

09/27/21
Jun 29-30, 1945 - Admiral Slocum kills the Japanese soldier who escorted Chen. Johnny has Chen put on the dead man’s uniform.

They’ve got a plan but will it work? Does Chen speak Japanese? It’s possible he knows a bit but realistically speaking I doubt that he speaks it well enough to pass as Japanese.

09/28/21
Jul 2-3, 1945 - Brandy sees Johnny and Slocum from a distance. Johnny shows up at the door a minute later. Brandy is so surprised to see him she lets go of the grenade.

Obviously, Johnny and Brandy are going to survive this moment of danger but how?

09/29/21
Jul 4-5, 1945 - Brandy drops the grenade. It rolls over towards Colonel Kiri who stares at it while Brandy and Johnny wonder why it hasn’t exploded yet.

Something must be wrong with the fuse. If that thing goes off then I think they will all be dead.

09/30/21
Jul 6-7, 1945 - the grenade turns out to be a dud. Slocum and Chen show up. Colonel Kiri seems to be dead.

What happened to Colonel Kiri? Did he take poison when no one was looking? Did he have a heart attack? There is no sign of anything that might have injured him.

10/01/21
Jul 9-10, 1945 - Johnny tells the others to head for home while he sticks around to blow up the secret base. Brandy, Admiral Slocum, and Chen decide they would rather stick around and help him finish the job.

There is no real explanation given as to what happened to Colonel Kiri. So much for all that tension that was building up. I wonder why Robbins decided to get rid of Colonel Kiri in this way? It’s very unsatisfying.

10/02/21
Jul 11-12, 1945 - Johnny and his three friends start to case the joint and plan their mission to destroy the airbase.

Brandy jokingly refers to herself as a PFC or Poor Foolish Civilian. I hadn’t heard that one before but it brought a smile to my face.

10/03/21
Jul 13-14, 1945 - Johnny and Slocum continue to plan the destruction of the Japanese airbase. The latest additions to their plans are a bow and several large drums of oil.

10/04/21
Jul 16-17, 1945 - Johnny starts to put his plan into action as he and Brandy prepare some arrows to be used as incendiary bombs. Slocum and Chen are given another task.

All this explaining is no where near as exciting or visually stimulating as I would like this strip to be.

10/05/21
Jul 18-19, 1945 - Admiral Slocum and Chen dump the contents of the oil drums. The wind blows the oil toward the building where the bombs are kept. Johnny fires flaming arrows, which were lit by Brandy, at the building.

Brandy uses a line “you may fire when ready, Gridley” which dates back to 1898 at the Battle of Manila Bay. It sounded like a quote from a movie to me. I wasn’t sure where it came from until I looked it up.

10/06/21
Jul 20-21, 1945 - Johnny and the others continue to pour oil on the fire and watch the Japanese soldiers attempt to put rescue their planes from the fire.

I really like the last panel of the first of these strips. Johnny and Brandy are silhouetted as the fire blazes behind them.

10/07/21
Jul 23-24, 1945 - Johnny and the others continue to wreck havoc at the Japanese airbase.

It has now been 2 weeks worth of strips since Colonel Kiri died of a heart attack. I’m ready for something different.

10/08/21
Jul 25-26, 1945 - Johnny and his friends watch the base go up in flames and start thinking about heading back to their airbase.

The first strip has two panels, the second of which is twice as wide as a regular panel and provides a panoramic view of the Japanese airbase as it burns.

10/09/21
Jul 27-28, 1945 - Johnny plans to steal a tank in the chaos that follows the start of the fire, but then he spots the tank’s crew approaching the vehicle.

What are the odds, realistically speaking, that Johnny or any of his friends know how to drive a tank? This is a comic strip, of course, so I’m sure that if they do steal the tank then that won’t be an issue.

How accurately depicted is that tank? It kind of looks like a Sherman tank to my eyes.

10/10/21
Jul 30-31, 1945 - Johnny and Chen orders Chen to open fire on the tank crew. Chen kills one of the tank crew but then he is hit in the shoulder. He charges the other Japanese soldiers who are still shooting at him.

I think it’s curtains for Chen. I know this is a comic strip but I don’t see how he could survive this encounter.

10/11/21
Aug 1-2, 1945 - Chen kills a second Japanese soldier and disarms a third before collapsing after taking multiple bullets at close range.

These two strips are all action. I especially like the way the perspective is flipped around in the first strip.

10/12/21
Aug 3-4, 1945 - Johnny kills or disables the Japanese soldier who is trying to close the turret to the tank. Johnny recommends that they get out of there right away. There are more Japanese soldiers headed their way. They have to leave Chen’s body behind.

I thought originally that there were 4 Japanese soldiers headed for the tank. Chen killed two, Johnny got one, what happened to the other one?

10/13/21
Aug 6-7, 1945 - Admiral Slocum opens fire on the advancing Japanese soldiers while Johnny tries to figure out how to drive the tank.

The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on Aug 6, 1945. There was no mention of the end of the war in Europe in this strip or other actual events. I wonder what the transition from wartime to post war will be like in this strip.

10/14/21
Aug 8-9, 1945 - Johnny tries to get the tank moving but he isn’t familiar with the controls. Two Japanese soldiers sneak up behind the tank just as Johnny gets it moving, in reverse.

The second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on Aug 9, 1945.

10/15/21
Aug 10-11, 1945 - Johnny gets the tank moving forward after backing over the Japanese soldiers who tried sneaking up on the Americans.

I love the angled shot through the “window”.

That’s it for this chapter of Johnny Hazard. It was about 6.5 months long. The next chapter is just 3 months in length. I have mixed feelings about his strip. I think the artwork is gorgeous.

Questions:
What happened to the baby? Did Brandy leave it with Chen's parents?
Brandy's last name is Jackson. I think she sticks around for a while but for how long and why does she leave?
Johnny's plane is named Hazard's Hazard but that plane crashed and was lost. Will Johnny use that name again?
