Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld (1983) 9

Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld (1983) 9
Jan 1984

Broken Homes
by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, Ernie Colón, John Costanza, Tom Ziuko, Karen Berger

Princess Amethyst and her allies fight with the three emissaries of the Varn. They succeed in driving the Varn back to their own dimension. They also save Lord Moonstone who was still alive but trapped in another dimension. The Diamond priest and Lord Ruby are killed during the fight.

The elder and younger surviving Emerald princesses take off on foot for the kingdom of Amethyst. They get some help faeries crossing a river but they are captured by malevolent spirits. Lord Aquamarine rescues them and together they travel to Castle Amethyst. Citrina is very happy to see them.

Carnelian tries to retrieve the amethyst from the lizard that took it and grew very large. Carnelian did not come prepared for the lizard which is now much bigger than him and breathes fire.

Thoughts

There is a brief glimpse at Amy’s parents on the first page.

The cover is a bit misleading. Yes, there is a big fight with the Varn but Lady Moonstone is not shown wielding a sword or taking part in the fight inside this comic book. The elder Princess Emerald and Lord Aquamarine are shown on the cover. They are both in this comic book but they are not in the Ruby kingdom with the others.

The coloring on page 17 is off. Amethyst’s mini-dress is colored pink instead of purple.

It seemed like Lord Moonstone was dead at the end of the previous issue. It is unclear how exactly he wound up in the dimension where the Varn fled to when they left the Gemworld. Presumably the emissaries of the Varn vacuumed him up and deposited him there.

I really like the page layouts in some of the fight sequences. There are lots of panel borders broken on pages 3 and 5. The string of small panels at the top of page 6 is a nice touch.

There is a truly bizarre sequences on pages 14 and 15. Dark Opal presents Lady Sapphire with a man she can marry now that Topaz has decided not to marry her. The would-be groom seems zombie-like. Lady Sapphire rejects him instantly. Dark Opal destroys the man without ever properly explaining who he was or where he came from. It was all very strange.

Purple Prose

The letters page consists of five praise filled letters and editor Karen Berger’s responses to them.
