Secret Lives of the X-Men: Iceman

Winter Carnival
by Mary Jo Duffy, George Perez, Alfredo Alcala

Iceman (Bobby Drake) visits Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He is horsing around with some students when armed men strike the campus. They are there to steal the school’s computer system which was donated by Henry Pym (Yellowjacket).

The leader of the would-be thieves calls himself Professor Thatcher and wields a cane that fires energy blasts. He momentarily slows Iceman but in the end he proves to be no match for the icy power of the former and future member of the X-Men.

Thoughts

Superhero stops “common” criminal armed with a high tech weapon is not my favorite sort of story.

Iceman creates an ice sculpture of himself. The ice sculpture had a C on the belt buckle but that’s the only place in this story where Iceman is shown with such a belt buckle. The C is presumably for Champions, another superhero team. Angel and Iceman were both members of the Champions.

There is a police officer named Jimmy D’Angelo who appears briefly in this story. He appeared previously in several issues of Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu. This was, according to my research, one of only two appearances he made outside of the pages of Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu.

The pencils are by Perez but it doesn’t look like Perez to my eyes. My guess is that Perez laid out the pages and panels and then Alcala finished the drawings. My confusion over the art might also have something to do with the fact that this story was done in black and white and I am used to seeing Perez pages in color.

My hopes for the third story in this issue aren’t terribly high at this point. Maybe I will be proven wrong. Hopefully I will
