Junior 10

Junior 10
Nov 1947

Stories by Bill Brown aka Al Feldstein

1. Junior: Of Mice and Women

Junior buys Deena a pair of mice for her birthday. The mice wreck havoc in Deena’s home. Junior spends the rest of the story trying to set things right with Deena. (9 pages)

Goofy is in the very beginning of this story but Gwenny is nowhere to be found.

Mice? Really? What kind of a person buys mice as a birthday present?

2. Junior: Canoe Picture This?

Junior goes canoeing with Goofy, Deena, and Gwenny. Junior takes his father’s camera on the canoeing trip. Junior’s father is planning to trade it in for a newer model. Lots of things don’t go according to plan. (8 pages)

3. Deena & Gwenny: What an Eyeful!

Deena wants to enter the beauty contest that Junior will be judging but Gwenny talks her out of it. Deena changes her mind after she sees Gwenny sweet talking Junior. (6 pages)

This story ended very abruptly. I was enjoying it, looking forward to seeing how it turned out, and felt cheated by the ending.

4. Junior: Goofy’s Tomatoe

Junior tells Deena that he can’t go out with her because he has to do homework. He heads to the library to study but along the way he runs into Goofy and Gwenny. Deena shows up and thinks that Junior lied to her and is on a date with Gwenny. (7 pages)

This story ends on a happier but less exciting note than I expected it to end. There are tomatoes in the story but they don’t play a major role in it.

The splash panel at the beginning of the story is misleading, as is frequently the case. Junior was headed to the library to work on an assignment for history class but in the splash panel he is holding a book for studying French. Deena is getting ready to throw a tomato at Junior in the splash panel but things don’t escalate quite to that point in the story.

I’m just noticing now how ridiculous Junior’s hair looks, especially when seen from the side.

None of the stories rise to the levels seen in the third and fourth stories of the previous issue. Hopefully the next issue will see a return to that form.

My favorite splash panel is probably the first one which is unfortunately not in full color because it was printed on the inside front cover.

The woman on the cover did not appear inside in this issue. Similarly, the scene on the cover does not resemble anything that took place inside this issue.

This comic book can be read for free at Comic Book Plus. A collected edition was published about 10 years ago. It included the complete run of Junior. It was called The Complete Junior and Sunny.
