Lies, Damn Lies and Lieutenant Wratz
by Paul Grist
Rico Costas is found dead in his cell the next day. There is no sign of the Blind Man. Lieutenant Wratz investigates the death of Rico. There is evidence that Rico was roughed up while in police custody including being sprayed in the eyes with mace. Wratz questions all the police officers at the New Eden police station.
Kane apprehends Ed Streetz, a reporter who is sneaking around the police station disguised as a cleaning person. Kate Felix doesn’t recognize Streetz’ face but she knows him by name. She blames him for something that happened to her father, Tony Felix.
Two cops crack under the pressure. One of the cops, Officer Stern, commits suicide rather than come clean. Officer Marylyn, the other cop, was about to own up to the fact that he was the one who sprayed Rico with Mace when Officer Munroe, a veteran, claims that he was the one who sprayed Rico with mace.
The issue ends with a flashback to when Wratz interrogated Kane during the investigation into the shooting of Dennis Harvey.
Thoughts
Wratz, according to my notes, first and only other appearance was in Kane 6.
Excellent stuff, once again. The visual storytelling is spectacular. There’s both a complete story here and bits and pieces of other plot threads. The tension is palpable. Grist reveals a lot of the details through pictures rather than words. The silent moments speak volumes.
To the Mill
Grist apologizes in this text piece on the inside front cover for taking so long to get this issue in print. It was a month late. He also gives away the tell that reveals whether a scene is a flashback or set in the present.
