34 pages
Chance, still disguised as King, visits Conchita’s apartment. He goes out looking for her. Bruno calls Chris, tells him that Dai Thomas called, he wants to talk. Chance goes to see him. They get into an argument. Dai retreats into his home. Chance slips and hits his head and gets knocked out. Someone kills Thomas while Chance is unconscious.
The police show up while Chance is still in Dai Thomas’ house. He has to fight his way out of there. He goes to see Frank and Mary White. He assures them that he had nothing to do with the death of Dai Thomas, which is all over the news.
Chance gets a message from Conchita. She wants to meet, talk. He goes to see her. It’s a trap. Karla, a friend of hers, almost kills Chance, who is still disguised as King. Chance tells them enough to convince them not to kill him.
LAPD Detective Rodrigues applies pressure on Bruno. The body of Davey King washes up on a beach. Chris, still disguised as King, is at King’s apartment when the police break down the door, rip off his mask and arrest him. Rodrigues tries to talk Chance into confessing to the murder of Dai Thomas. Frank and Mary White show up at the police station. Mary claims that Chance was in bed with her the night that Dai Thomas was killed.
Chance impersonates Frank the next day. He fools Rodrigues and Mary. She gets angry when she finds out.
The chapter ends with Chance, disguised as Frank, leaving to deliver the ransom demanded by the kidnappers.
Thoughts
This chapter is much longer than either of the previous two. It could easily have been (and maybe should have been) broken into two chapters. I identified a couple spots where I could have created a chapter break.
I was right about Chance not waking up in Conchita’s apartment. She helped him get back to King’s place.
Somebody set up Chance to take the fall for Dai Thomas' death. They killed Thomas and then notified the police. That’s the only way the police could have shown up as quickly as they did.
Was I right about Davey King not having anything to do with the abduction of Ronan White? It seems that way but I’m not sure.
There is another mention of Emerald in this chapter, yet another link back to the mini-series. It really does pay to read these stories in order. It also pays to read them more than once.
I love the scene with Frank and Mary and Chance disguised as Frank. It becomes very confusing as to which one is the real Frank and which one is Chance.
Who killed Dai Thomas? Who set up Chance to take the fall for that murder? Who kidnapped Ronan White? Were they in any way connected to Davey King? Is there any connection between the murder of Thomas and the kidnapping of Ronan?
This is so good.
