The Redeemer by Joe Kubert
25 pages
The tale of an eternal warrior known as the Redeemer who has lived multiple life times but has no conscious memory of his previous lives. An aged man known as the Infernal One wants to take him down, sees him as a threat.
Redeemer = Jesus
Infernal One = Devil
The story opens in the Himalayan Mountains a group of explorers finds the castle where the Infernal One lives. He recruits them to hunt the Redeemer for him.
The scene shifts to a space station where Jim Torkan (the Redeemer) lives and works. He doesn't know that he is the Redeemer, but has dreams of past lives. Space pirates attack the station. Jim fights back and kills most of them but then goes with the lone surviving pirate to meet the man behind the marauders.
This part doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I can understand his curiosity about why the pirates attacked but I don't understand him walking into the lair of the enemy.
Love the art but I've got my doubts about Kubert's writing chops.
U.S.S. Stevens by Sam Glanzman
10 pages
Another story from Glanzman from his days in the Navy. The new skipper of the Stevens orders a dress blues inspection while they are on escort duty in the middle of the war. The ship gets attacked by Japanese planes and the crew has to defend it still dressed in their blues. Once again my favorite story of the issue.
Angel and the Ape by Brian Buniak
8 pages
More of the same. Silly. Not really my cup of tea.
