Mako the Scribe
By Jim Zub, Andy Suriano

Mako the Scribe seeks the truth about the legend of Samurai Jack. He travels far and wide asking people what they know about Jack but it isn’t until he meets a man named Lamarr (obvious reference to Phil Lamarr who is the voice of Samurai Jack) that he finds someone who has met Jack. Lamarr introduces him to others who have met Jack, most of whom look familiar to me from the cartoons.

Mako gets to meet Jack who says something that turns the concept of the show on its head. He says that he kept fighting to get back to the past but in retrospect that was the wrong thing to do. The past is an ideal that can never be recreated. It blew my mind. It is a political statement of sorts.

This is my kind of Samurai Jack story. It is deeper and is less surface level than the other stories in this collection. I think I prefer the stories drawn by Andy Suriano. His style isn’t as polished as some of the other artists that worked on this book but his art has an energy that I think embodies the spirit of Samurai Jack.
