The Black Vulture
By Arnold Drake, Bruno Premiani

Great cover! I’m not sure if it is a swipe or what inspired it but it looks very different from most Doom Patrol covers of this era.

The Doom Patrol calls it quits. Robotman and Negative Man leave after the Chief doesn’t respond to their calls for help because he is too busy with Madame Rouge. Elasti-Girl and Madame Rouge get into an argument and stomp off leaving the Chief all alone.

The Black Vulture and his winged beasts attack the lonely Chief. The Chief defends himself using devices in his wheelchair and DPHQ. Robotman, Negative Man, and Elasti-Girl return and help fight Black Vulture and his legions of flying beasts. In the end it is a squad of native Americans who come to the rescue after the Chief’s three protégés are taken out of action by a swarm of bats.

Plot-wise not so great, especially the ending, but I still enjoyed this story quite a bit. For the most part I think it was the little character moments, which mostly consisted of arguments among the team members that did it for me. That and the weird, wacky sense of humor that occasionally crops up here and there.
