Terra in the Night
By Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Romeo Tanghal
Changeling encounters Terra (last seen in New Teen Titans 26) once again. He tries to stop her as she is fleeing the scene after robbing a bank. She evades capture by the green Titan. He catches up to her at the zoo. He’s more successful this time around. He knocks her out and flies back to Titans Tower with her.
Changeling gets some help from the other Titans but it takes all of them (minus Dick, Kory, and Donna who are off doing other stuff) to get her to understand that they just want to help her. She explains that her real name is Tara and that her father has been kidnapped by terrorists. Her father is the ruler of another country. Her mother died in childbirth and Tara was sent to the United States and raised there. She mentions a brother but doesn’t name him. She talks the Titans into helping her deal with the terrorists. They find the baddies in a railroad yard in Long Island City although they don’t seem to know much about the whereabouts of Terra’s father. Wally and Gar seems happy enough to accept her story but Raven and Cyborg both sense that something isn’t right with Terra.
Kory is looking forward to a date with Dick but he’s tired and doesn’t feel like going out. They hang at her place but he is a bit gloomy. He’s still bothered by Bethany Snow, the reporter whose one-sided stories cast the New Teen Titans in a negative light. Dick wants to talk to Adrian Chase, the district attorney whom the Titans first encountered during the Brother Blood story (21-22) and then again during the Runaways story (26-27).
Donna chats with Dick and Kory before heading out for a date with Terry. The date doesn’t happen because Terry can’t break free from Marcia, his ex-wife, with whom he is discussing arrangements for Jennifer, their daughter. Donna takes a hint and leaves rather than try to wait until Terry and his ex are done.
The New Brotherhood of Evil returns in a brief interlude. They arrive in Zandia, the country controlled by Brother Blood’s church. They use their powers to indirectly and directly kill a number of Blood’s armed followers. They are looking for their victims' leader but he doesn’t make an appearance in this issue.
Sister Sade or Sister Soul? There is a follower of Brother Blood who is referred to by two different names. She is referred to once as Sister Sade and then twice more as Sister Soul. I’m not sure if there’s a reasonable explanation behind this or if it is just a mistake.
Changeling uses the term "sanforized" on page 2. I wasn't sure what it meant and had to look it up. It is a process that is applied to cotton fabric that prevents it from shrinking further. It's a bit of an oddball reference if you ask me.
Donna getting out of the shower while talking to Kory? Pretty tame by today’s standards but 35 years ago that was very risqué for a DC comic book.
I continue to enjoy this series. There's a few developments in this issue but mostly it is hints and prologue. I don't mind that when the story is told as beautifully as it is by this creative team. Perez continues to knock it out of the ballpark with the multiple ways that he arranges panels.
