Marvel Two-in-One 47

Marvel Two-in-One 47
featuring The Thing and the Yancy Street Gang
Jan 1979

Happy Deathday, Mister Grimm!
By Bill Mantlo, Chic Stone

It’s the Thing’s birthday. He starts by celebrating with Fantastic Four teammates. He gets a package which explodes and a message from the Yancy Street Gang warning him to stay away from Yancy Street. He ignores the warning and heads for Yancy Street, alone.

This is a bit of a hot mess in my opinion. I’m not sure who is to blame. The gist of it is that the Thing gets a message from the Yancy Street Gang warning him not to visit Yancy Street. Naturally, that’s exactly what he does. He is attacked by gangsters, robots, and deadly machinery. The Yancy Street Gang have been captured by the gangsters (led by Mr. Carnation) and forced to build the killer machinery. They break free just in time to help Mr. Grimm fight the baddies. The issue ends with the reveal that the mastermind behind the plot to kill the Thing is the Machinesmith.

I bought this issue because I was interested in the next issue. Both are written by Bill Mantlo. The Jack of Hearts is in the next issue. I think there is a thread that runs through both issues.

I am not crazy about the visual story telling in this issue, at all. It feels very choppy.

Avengers Cosmic Epic Adventure: It looks like this is a reference to the story that ran from Avengers (1963) 167 - 177. The image used is the same one that was used on the cover of Avengers (1963) 172. Eventually this run of issues would get collected as the Korvac Saga. I have not read this story. The weird thing is the ad makes it sound as if the story is ongoing when it actually ended a couple months before this issue of Marvel Two-in-One hit the stands.
