Episode 3: The Pure Love Drug
Act 1
Fujimoto’s girlfriend breaks up with him. She can’t stand what his job does to him, how he walls himself off from her emotionally. He warns her about being too open with her feelings about his job. If he reported her she could get sent to a re-education center or maybe even executed by lethal injection.
The rest of the chapter focuses on Katsumura, a budding commercial movie director. He had been working as an assistant for 4 years. He’s finally about to get his break, the chance to direct. His job has run him ragged.
Katsumura takes Ateromin, an illegal drug, which helps him to stay awake longer than he should be. It also gives him the shakes. He collapsed a few weeks ago and was taken to the hospital. Kazusa, his girlfriend, disapproves of his drug use. It scares her. She flushed his stash down the toilet while he is at work.
Katsumura flips out when he sees what she did. He hits her. He was happy when he got home because he just got the good news about getting to direct. It isn’t the first time that she has destroyed his supply of Ateromin. She tries reasoning with but he won’t listen.
Katsumura takes off for the first day of filming. He and Kazusa are still living together but they aren’t talking much anymore. While he is away Fujimoto shows up at their apartment with an Ikigami for Kazusa.
I wondered if it was going to be Kazusa who would get the Ikigami. I thought it might be her partly because the last two recipients were men and partly because Katsumura seemed like too obvious a choice.
