Marvel Two-in-One 48

Marvel Two-in-One 48
Featuring The Thing and Jack of Hearts
Feb 1979

My Master, Machinesmith!
By Bill Mantlo, Chic Stone, Tax Blaisdell

Jack of Hearts gets lured to a ship on Pier 9. The Machinesmith’s robots attack. They are just the appetizer. The main course is the Thing who is being mentally controlled by Machinesmith. The fight ends once Jack of Hearts blasts the Thing after he figures that the Thing must also be a robot.

The Yancy Street Gang free themselves and fight off Carnations’s thugs. They take down Carnation only to discover, once the Thing and the Jack of Hearts show up, that Machinesmith is just a robot.

This issue feels a little more narratively cohesive than the previous one.

This is not quite as bad as the previous issue but it still ain’t no masterpiece or something I would recommend to must people.

Letters Page

All three letters are in response to Marvel Two-in-One 42, the first part of a two-part story which is a prelude to the six-part Project Pegasus story that begins in Marvel Two-in-One 51, as advertised in responses from the editor. Two of the three letters heap praise on the creative team that worked on that issue. In particular Ralph Macchio and John Byrne are singled out for praise. Byrne is slated to draw the six-part Project Pegasus story which will be written by Macchio and Mark Gruenwald.

The third letter is critical of the story in Marvel Two-in-One 42 for reintroducing the Cosmic Cube which had been damaged (?) in an earlier story. The writer of the letter is Kurt Busiek. The editor disagrees with Busiek and responds with a lengthy explanation of why the story works.
